During E3 2018, the prestigious event highlighted several forthcoming AAA games such as Kingdom Hearts 3, which received a new trailer, and The Last of Us 2, which received its own venue; however, several independent game studios also took the stage throughout the event and deserve serious recognition. For example, games such as Ashen, in development by Aurora44, and Wargroove, in development by Chucklefish, highlight the beauty, capability, and diversity of indie games.

At times, it can difficult to pinpoint an indie game, as the best of them can sometimes receive publishing deals from gaming giants such as Microsoft and EA. Indies are completely capable of competing at the level of AAA games, with the best examples being the critical success of Minecraft or recognition by larger publishing companies, such as EA's support and publication of Unravel Two. While several Indie games were showcased, here's what we at Game Rant consider the best indie titles of the event:

6 Session

Skateboarding sim Session EA Skate inspired

Fans of EA's Skate series may have been disappointed by the lack of Skate 4 at E3 2018, but an independently developed skateboarding simulator known as Session may be able to fill those shoes. With a focus on realistic gameplay, the Montreal-based independent developer Creā-ture Studios made it so that Session would be heavily reliant on analog-based controls, and considering the game raised more than double its crowdfunding goals, this game could easily be well-received by fans.

Session is expected to release in 2019 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

5 Overcooked 2

Developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team17, the original Overcooked was described as fun and frantic, so it's not surprising to see the title receiving a sequel. While the core formula may not have drastically changed, players can still see a number of improvements, such as the ability to throw ingredients and changing stages. Plus, Overcooked 2 will feature online multiplayer for those ready to test their cooking skills.

Overcooked 2 releases August 7, 2018, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Xbox One.

4 Ori and the Will of the Wisps

At E3 2017, Moon Studios - the independent developer behind Ori and the Blind forest - first announced its sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Now, a year later, the studio returned to showcase new gameplay with brand-new combat, customization options (some seen above), challenging puzzles, and intriguing boss fights. With the critical acclaim that surrounded the first title, it'll be interesting to see how Ori and the Will of the Wisps measures up.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is expected to release in 2019 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

3 Tunic

Personally developed by Andrew Shouldice and published by Finji, Tunic is an isometric, action-adventure game with obvious influences from the Legend of Zelda series. Players take control of an anthropomorphic fox who discovers and explores locations such as temples, forests, and cathedrals. While it has yet to received a release date, Tunic is definitely one of the more promising indie titles to keep an eye on, though it remains to be seen if this Zelda-like game will ever meet the success of Breath of the Wild.

Tunic is currently in development for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

2 Sea of Solitude

An upcoming adventure game, Sea of Solitude sees its players take the role of Kay who explores a Berlin-based but submerged city to discover why she has turned into a monster. Developed by Jo-Mei Games and published by EA through its EA Originals indie program, Cornelia Geppert - the creative director - has stated the game led to explore her fears and emotions, so it could easily be a game with serious depth.

Sea of Solitude is expected to launch in early 2019.

1 Generation Zero

Avalanche Studios - the developer behind Just Cause 4 which was also present at E3 - decided to develop and self-publish Generation Zero, which takes place in 1980s Sweden. Players take on hostile robots in an open-world setting, with the game also containing a day/night cycle, the ability to cripple or destroy robot enemies, and a loot mechanic. While there is not much yet known concerning the title, it certainly has a promising premise and trailer.

Generation Zero is expected to launch in 2019.

Of course, with everything showcased throughout the event, there were many indie titles that could have appealed to any number of gamers. Tell us, Ranters, what was your favorite indie game showcased at E3 2018? I’m
