A new study claims to reveal the 10 most popular horror video games for gamers to try this Halloween season. It's October, which means that gamers all over the world are looking for horror games to play. There are new horror games launching in October 2022, but there are also plenty of other horror games that have been out for a while that fans may want to try to help celebrate Halloween this year.

AskGamblers analyzed Google search data to come up with a list of the 15 most popular horror games this Halloween season. Ranked by US and global search volume, the 15 most popular horror games this Halloween season are Dead by Daylight, Phasmophobia, Bloodborne, Doki Doki Literature Club, The Last of Us, Silent Hill, Little Nightmares, Mortal Kombat 11, Returnal, Until Dawn, Metro Exodus, Outlast, Dead Space, Little Nightmares 2, and Carrion.

Right off the bat, one might take issue with this study because of the inclusion of Mortal Kombat 11. Mortal Kombat 11 is an incredibly gory and violent game, but that does not make it a horror game. Labeling Mortal Kombat 11 a horror game is a big stretch, and so one has to wonder what other game would have made the list had MK11 not taken up a spot.

Otherwise, the list is relatively unsurprising, except one would think The Last of Us would rank higher considering the hype around the HBO TV series and the fact that The Last of Us PS5 remake released just a month ago. Dead by Daylight and Phasmophobia taking the top spots is otherwise unsurprising, as they remain two of the most-talked about games in the genre, and their multiplayer elements give them longer legs than single-player horror games.

The methodology of using Google search data does not necessarily mean that these games are the most popular this Halloween season, however. While it's likely true that Dead by Daylight and Phasmophobia will be two of the most-played horror games this month, Bloodborne's inclusion so high up on the list likely has more to do with people looking up the possibility of a Bloodborne PS5 remake.

Rumors of a Bloodborne PS5 remake or remaster have persisted for years, only for nothing to ever come of it. The game was trending online just recently after the plans for a Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake leaked online, so horror gaming fans should keep that in mind.
