Halo Infinite provides simple, but customizable settings that have an immense impact on gameplay. Because Infinite features a sprint button, players with standard console controllers may have a difficult time re-binding their on-foot controls. This is especially true for fans of the franchise who have been playing Halo since Halo: CE 20 years ago. This quick guide will cover the proper settings for optimized control and feel for gamers of all skill levels. Some settings, like dead zones, will depend on the controller used and input preference.

General

  • Button Layout: Custom
  • Thumbstick Layout: Default
  • Vibration: Disabled

The above three settings will be the best for the majority of players. Obviously, there are exceptions. Some gamers may like the feel of vibration or prefer the default button layout. Likewise, there are a small minority of people that play Halo Infinite with reversed stick inputs and/or inverted look.

Movement And Aiming

  • Invert Settings: Only select if you play inverted
  • Hold To Crouch: Yes
  • Hold To Zoom: No
  • Hold To Sprint: No
  • Movement Assisted Steering: No
  • Maintain Sprint: Yes
  • Auto Clamber: Yes
  • Step Jump: No

Classic Halo players know that hold to crouch is your friend. This allows the spartan to jump onto high ledges and sneak up on enemies with ease. Halo games have always featured a touch to zoom, this is because guns like the Sniper have multiple zoom levels.

Some FPS players may opt for the more familiar hold to zoom. People will definitely want to be able to tap their sprint button and maintain sprint to traverse the maps quicker. Finally, the auto clamber setting should be on just in case players fail to hit the mantle button near an obstacle. Jumping high is Master Chief’s signature move. Set step up to off.

Sensitivity And Acceleration

  • Beginners: 1-5 Sensitivity, 2-10 Look Acceleration
  • Adept Players: 8-10 Sensitivity, 0-5 Look Acceleration

There are a lot of variables when it comes to selecting the acceleration and sensitivity settings that work well for a particular person. Look acceleration increases the speed that the character turns when moving the right thumbstick to the left or right. Unlike sensitivity, look acceleration increases the speed of the turn by accelerating the input while the thumbstick is held down. High look acceleration allows the spartan to turn around quicker, but at the cost of aiming consistency.

Sensitivity applies a consistent increase or decrease to a character’s movement. In other words, holding the right thumbstick one way will cause the character to turn at the same speed no matter how long the input is held. For competitive players, look acceleration is not usually a good thing. Hitting precise shots requires minute movements, and acceleration can throw off timing. For beginners, the acceleration will allow for a low general sensitivity while being able to turn around quick enough to react.

Zoom Sensitivity

The most effective zoom sense will depend on the player. In a majority of matches, zoom sense will not play a large role. However, the lower the sense the more accurate people will be from range. The higher the zoom, the lower the sense should be. Setting the 1.4x zoom to .8 is a good starting point.

Move Thumbstick And Look Thumbstick

It takes quite some time to understand how the dead zones work in Infinite. To keep matters simple, get the dead zones as low as possible without generating stick drift. The term stick drift refers to when the reticle moves with little to no input. It can also apply to when aim drifts after an input is made.

Responsiveness is important, but setting the Deadzone too low can impact accuracy due to stick drift. Try the default settings and work from there. Most newer controllers will have a deadzone at anywhere from 4-10 in the settings.

For the Max Input Threshold, a setting of 10 or higher is preferable. Having a high max input threshold will reduce slow turn while decreasing the look acceleration variance. To put it simply, set the max input to the highest number that feels comfortable.

On Foot

The on-foot settings are almost entirely based on personal preference. Due to the addition of the sprint and slide Halo animations, most people will have at least one action they struggle to find a place for. We recommend the following for those using classic controls:

  • Jump: A
  • Crouch/Slide: L
  • Sprint: R (Or L)
  • Fire Weapon: RT
  • Use Equipment: RB
  • Melee: B
  • Throw Grenade: LB (or LT)
  • Reload/Vent/Interact: X
  • Drop Weapon: Left D-pad
  • Zoom: LT (or R)
  • Mark: Up Dpad
  • Campaign Menu: Select

These are just some examples based on a few days of experience playing the game. Bumper jumpers will have the A button to bind, and there are an endless number of other ways to use the controller in Infinite. For those with some experience, the above settings will feel familiar.

Halo Infinite's multiplayer is now available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The campaign launches in December.
