Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime that follows a kid named Yuji Itadori who ate a demon's finger and as a result, was gifted powers. He is enrolled at a school dedicated to educating gifted sorcerers on how to effectively and discretely eliminated demonic spirits that walk among normal humans unnoticed, causing chaos.
The anime has only released one season so far, but for fans itching for more stuff like it, there are plenty of games that capture a specific part of what made Jujutsu Kaisen such a hit as both a manga and anime series. From Japanese role-playing games to 2022 indie game titles, there's something that will scratch that itch.
8 Persona 4 Golden
Persona 4 Golden is one of two Persona titles on the list and that's because few other series pull off the setting of a group of kids attending a school and overcoming evil as well as they do. Like Jujutsu Kaisen, the main part of the game's narrative revolves around mysterious murders taking place in a town and no one knows exactly what's happening.
The interpersonal relationships between the students are at the core of what makes the game special as players go through a day-by-day schedule. Each day important decisions are made regarding how the day should be spent, which result in the growth of certain relationships or gameplay-related statistics.
7 Sifu
Sifu may seem like an odd choice on the surface, but this action beat 'em up game from developer Slocap could be a Jujutsu Kaisen fan's next favorite game. It presents a world in which the player approaches combat situations in a strategic and planned way.
Well, at least that's the way to do it to see sustained success. Many of the fights in Jujutsu Kaisen are intimate one-on-one battles and Sifu has a way of capturing that same magic in a type of gaming experience that isn't too common outside of the top-down arcade beat em' up games from decades ago.
6 Yakuza: Like A Dragon
The Yakuza series as a whole is known for its mix of zany comedy and undeniably Japanese stories and Yakuza: Like A Dragon falls right into this belief. The game features a main character named Ichiban Kasuga who is as likable as he is unpredictable. As a series Yakuza presents an authentic yet hyperbolic glimpse into Japanese culture and society, while still not being afraid to poke fun at itself.
Kasuga may not be a direct parallel to Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen, but they both share this brash confidence that often supersedes their actual skill. Comedy is hard to find in the world of gaming and Yakuza: Like A Dragon nails it on that front.
5 Monster Prom
Jujutsu Kaisen is full of action and intrigue, but the anime also happens to have its fair share of comedy and romantic moments. It's hard to imagine how people could fall in love when the world around them is corrupted by demonic spirits, but they manage to do it. The 2018 indie dating simulator Monster Prom shares much of that same energy as players must figure out which unearthly student is their dream match. Developed by Beautiful Glitch, this hilariously dark take on the dating sim genre provides an experience unlike any other, on a myriad of platforms.
4 Dragon Ball FighterZ
Considered by many to be the most critically-acclaimed game based on an anime license, Dragon Ball FighterZ managed to be both a respected competitive experience in the Fighting Game Community and also a love letter to a beloved anime a generation of kids fell in love with.
Developer Arc System Works managed to capture the controlled chaos of Shonen anime and displayed the colorful brilliance that made Dragon Ball Z a global phenomenon. If the hype and over-the-top battle moments from Jujutsu Kaisen are the hooks for some, then Dragon Ball FighterZ is the perfect place to try and experience it for one's self.
3 Danganronpa
Though the Persona series has garnered tons of popularity in the West, it's not the only Japanese gaming series of note, focused on a group of high school kids amid danger. Danganronpa follows a group of high school students who must do the unthinkable. To escape Hope's Peak Academy, they must kill another student and not be caught as the murderer.
The twist is that if the murderer is caught they are sentenced to death, but if a student wrongly accuses someone they'd be put to death instead. It creates a high-stakes environment where students must protect themselves while also trying to figure out the best path to freedom.
2 Cult of the Lamb
The recently released Cult of the Lamb from developer Massive Monster is a combination of both rogue-like and management simulation focused on letting the player develop and grow a cult of followers. As assumed the game deals with evil demonic spirits, which is also a key part of Jujutsu Kaisen's narrative.
The loop for Cult of the Lamb sees the player venture out in hopes of vanquishing demonic spirits and leaders, and upon victory, they return home to manage their cult members, gather resources, and build a lasting community of people sworn to worship said leader of the cult.
1 Persona 5 Royal
A group of students using their powerful gifts as manifestations in an attempt to overcome evil may sound like the pitch for Jujutsu Kaisen, but it also happens to be the description of Persona 5 Royal. Not only is this game considered to be one of the greatest role-playing games of all time, sitting at a Metacritic of 95, but it captures the feeling audiences love, of experiencing a group of teens deal with issues related to growing up and discovering themselves.
Persona 5 Royal has an engaging cast of characters, and just like Jujutsu Kaisen, part of the fun is talking to friends about which characters are amazing, which are inspiring, and which are completely insufferable.
