An ongoing trend exists to adapt successful fantasy literary franchises, often those that fall into the Young Adult category. After the likes of Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, another vampire series got an adaptation, in the form of a new TV series. Vampire Academy focuses on the adventures of two vampire friends, Rose and Lissa, and the dangers they face while going to their school together.

Since the first few episodes of the show are already out and those who enjoy it will binge-watch them fast, they might be looking for more alternatives to the show. The good news is there are multiple fantasy horror series to watch for everyone who loves Vampire Academy.

5 Being Human

Being Human US

It's true that the heroes of Being Human are much older than the Vampire Academy characters. Even so, the series has a similar feeling to it, especially the American version (the original show is British). The characters have to deal with problems arising from their supernatural abilities and their lifestyle. For example, Aidan doesn't want to drink human blood like other vampires, which causes trouble for him with the vampire who turned him.

The characters are relatable, be it the werewolf Josh, the ghost Sally, or Aidan, who all end up living in the same place and form an unlikely friendship. Being Human does have some horror moments, such as when one of the characters ends up locked in with a werewolf about to turn feral, but at the same time, it's primarily a story about friendship and life challenges.

4 Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the classics, and even though it only started airing in 1997, many younger viewers might not be familiar with the show. Buffy is a 16-year-old girl who's the slayer, a girl chosen to kill vampires. That doesn't stop her from falling for one of them. The series is full of action, humor, romance, and just like Vampire Academy, it takes care to build deep relationships between the characters.

It became so successful that it ran for seven seasons, leading to the creation of multiple novels and comic books as well as the spin-off show Angel. Buffy the Vampire Slayer works today just as well as it did at the time of its release, so for any fan of the fantasy horror genre, the show is a must-watch. It's currently streaming on Disney Plus, making it easy to binge-watch for anybody interested in doing so.

3 Fate: The Winx Saga

The Cast Of Fate: The Winx Saga

With its second season released this month, the Netflix show Fate: Winx Saga is an ideal watch for Vampire Academy fans. Both shows are set in a school, so even though they work with a different set of powers, they have a lot of things in common. The show offers many horror moments but puts emphasis on developing friendships and romantic relationships as well. Simply everything people can expect when they study at a school full of young students.

Both seasons have only thirteen episodes in total, making Fate: The Winx Saga another ideal candidate for a binge-watching session. Considering how many mysteries the characters have to crack, similar to Rose and Lissa, it's easy to watch the show in one go.

2 Hex

Hex TV show

One of the overlooked fantasy horror shows about younger heroes has a lot in common with Vampire Academy. Hex is a British TV show that ran for two seasons between 2004 and 2005. Just like Vampire Academy, it's set in a school environment, and in both cases, the heroes' studies will be far from peaceful. Hex centers on Cassandra, an outsider who has only one real friend, and whose life changes when she gains supernatural powers. From there on, the show is a combination of horror, drama, and romance.

Christina Cole gives a solid performance in the leading role, even though Cassandra isn't always likable. Another name among the cast will be familiar to many people - it's Michael Fassbender as the antagonist Azazeal, who has a close relationship with Cassandra. Hex is an underappreciated horror series that nevertheless has the potential to please all fans of this genre.

1 The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries Elena and Stefan

Not only do Vampire Academy and The Vampire Diaries share the topic of vampires, but the same person also stood behind both of them - Julie Plec. As a result, The Vampire Diaries is a must-watch for anybody who enjoyed Vampire Academy. The show focuses on Elena Gilbert, a 17-year-old girl who meets the vampire Stefan and also his evil brother Damon. From there on, things get even more complicated when werewolves, witches, and other creatures enter the scene.

The Vampire Diaries have its fair share of horror scenes and the characters die a lot, but romance and action are also present in great numbers. The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons, and also spawned two sequels that are equally worth watching - The Originals (five seasons) and Legacies (four seasons) about a school for young supernatural creatures, providing a lot of content for everyone who likes the genre.
