Final Fantasy is one of the most legendary JRPG franchises of all time. The series is full to the brim with a bunch of recognizable creatures, spells, characters, and everything else along the same lines that have appeared across the series despite each numbered entry being a standalone story. One of the many creatures that have appeared across almost every Final Fantasy game are the adorable chocobos.

Along with moogles, chocobos have become the de facto mascot of the series. These cute birds serve as a mode of transport that let players avoid random battles in the overworld and reach their destinations at a quicker pace. While numerous chocobos have appeared across the series, some are simply more iconic than others.

7 Fat Chocobo (Final Fantasy 7)

The Fat Chocobo has been a running gag in the series. Watching a pudgier version of this adorable bird appear to squash enemies in Final Fantasy 7 makes for a hilarious time that never ceases to be entertaining.

Sure, there's no denying that the Fat Chocobo materia is the weakest summon in the and is quickly discarded once players have access to better and more powerful summon materia. However, that doesn't change the fact that requesting the aid of this foe makes for a great time no matter how many times this animation is repeated due to its sheer absurdity.

6 Boko (Final Fantasy 5)

One of the most adorable chocobos in Final Fantasy history comes in the fifth entry, with Boko making his presence quite palpable from the very start of the game. It's made evidently clear from the get-go that Bartz and Boko have a great bond that they've shared for quite sometime before the beginning of the series.

This is precisely what makes the loss of Boko pretty sad, even if players had only interacted with this chocobo for the shortest time. Thankfully, players get to find Boko later on in the game, discovering that he'd started a family with another chocobo named Koko! It's a pretty cute moment that pretty much sums up Final Fantasy 5's lighthearted and wholesome tone.

5 Choco (Final Fantasy 9)

Final Fantasy 9 used chocobos in a pretty interesting way. Players were encouraged to summon a Chocobo named Choco in various parts of the map and complete the Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest to get a bunch of rewards.

This also lets Choco upgrade to traverse different types of terrain, getting a visual overhaul to denote his evolution from a humble chocobo to one that can traverse whichever terrain he wishes. This is the reason why so many people try and find all the Chocographs in Final Fantasy 9.

4 Chicobo (Final Fantasy 8)

Final Fantasy 8 is a game that was paired with a relatively unknown PocketStation title called Chocobo World. This game was never released in the West, which is the major reason why not a lot of people know about this minigame.

This game was the first title to give an official title to chocobo chicks, called chicobos. Given how adorable the adult chocobos already are, it goes without saying that the chicobos reach a whole different plane in terms of sheer cuteness.

3 Chocolina (Final Fantasy 13)

Final Fantasy 13 is not exactly the most beloved title around, with most people considering it to be the black sheep of the franchise. The game adopted an extremely linear approach along with both a cast of characters and a narrative that weren't really as iconic or memorable as the ones featured in other games.

That being said, there's no denying that the character designs of the cast are truly remarkable. The fact that Sazh has a cute chocobo chick in his afro makes him pretty memorable in this regard, with the chicobo being named in Final Fantasy 13-2. Chocolina is pretty adorable, although her human version is a bit uncomfortable to look at.

2 The First Ever Chocobo (Final Fantasy 2)

It would be impossible to talk about iconic chocobos in Final Fantasy without mentioning their first appearance in the series. Final Fantasy 2 is arguably the worst game in the series, but props should be given to this title for introducing this mascot for the first time.

Of course, the first appearance of the chocobo was far from its final variant. The different variants of the chocobo and their extended musical theme were developed in later games.

1 Gold Chocobo (Final Fantasy 7)

Final Fantasy 7 featured a bunch of unique chocobos that could be bred to access different types of terrain. This minigame is pretty engaging, with the final evolution of the breed being the legendary Gold Chocobo that lets players traverse almost any area on the map.

Players who want to get the most powerful summon materia in the game need to breed a Gold Chocobo to reach the island where the Knights of the Round materia can be found. It's an amazing reward for sticking through a breeding minigame that can be quite tedious at times.
