The universe of Borderlands has always been filled with wacky and over-the-top moments that have left players awed and sometimes scratching their heads. So, players can expect that the franchise's fourth installment will be even crazier than all of its predecessors. Especially since Gearbox's newest Borderland-themed title, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, already lays the groundwork for Borderlands 4.

The wackiness isn't limited to the main storyline since the Borderlands series has over 20 different DLC campaigns that add even more hours (and GUNS!) to their playthrough. But, players wanting to get the most out of the Borderlands franchise should carefully choose which DLC campaign they play since some aren't worth the hours of grind.

Updated June 28, 2022 by Daniel Dilena: The Borderlands franchise is one of the best over-the-top, guns-blazing games out there. And now, with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, players can wield powerful melee weapons and spells that can obliterate even the most challenging bosses. Despite Borderlands 2 still being crowned the best entry in the series due to its vast amount of DLC content, the other entries still have plenty of content for players to discover. So, this Borderlands DLC ranked list has been expanded, so fans of the series can continue to enjoy learning more about the unique world of Pandora.

15 Borderlands – The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned

Borderlands, The Zombie Island of Dr. Zed

The Plot: Marcus Kincaid tells the story (typical in the Borderlands franchise) of an island where its workers are being zombified, so they can work nonstop. But these zombie workers rebel against management, so it's up to the player to bring back order.

This unique zombie-themed DLC campaign lets players explore six new areas and has over 25 side quests for players to complete. On top of that, fans of the series can fight two new enemies: Pumpkinhead and Tankensteins. The only issue with this Borderlands DLC is that it doesn't scale well, so a player can plow through its content at max level (an issue that Gearbox didn't fix until the first Borderlands 3 DLC).

14 Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – The Holodome Onslaught

The Plot: Axton, Gaige, and Tiny Tina listen carefully to Athena as she tells the story of how she became a vault hunter. But Athena's audience grows tired of the story, and only wants to hear the violent part. So Athena tells a shortened version through the Holodome Onslaught.

Even though Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is often met with harsh criticism due to its short story and lack of replayability, The Holodome Onslaught DLC offers a couple of extra hours of gameplay. It features six new weapons, some of which aren't too practical to use since they have lower than average firepower. This Borderlands DLC merits a spot in this ranked list since it gives fans a little more insight into the character of Athena.

13 Borderlands 2 – Headhunters

Borderlands 2 Headhunters DLC packs.

The Plot: There are five Headhunter DLCs: Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax, Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre, How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day, The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler, and T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest. Each Headhunter DLC features a short mission that ultimately leads to a boss fight.

Even though the Headhunters DLCs aren't technically "campaign DLCs," they deserve mention since they provide some backstory for popular characters like Moxxi, Marcus, and Sir Hammerlock. Upon defeating the main story boss, players will receive a unique head customization that they use to show off to their friends. The head customizations alone put this entry higher on the list.

12 Borderlands 3 – Bounty of Blood

Borderlands 3, Bounty of Blood

The Plot: A sheriff calls for the aid of the Vault Hunters to protect the small town of Vestige, which is under siege by the Devil Riders. In order to beat them, players must use leftover technology from the Company to fight them off.

Players that have asked themselves, "Which Borderlands 3 DLC is the best?" will be happy to know that the Bounty of Blood DLC is one of the answers. With this DLC campaign, players gain access to a new vehicle dubbed "Jetbeast," one of the best in the series. Players will have hours of fun in this wild west-themed adventure, which Tiny Tina's Wonderlands should keep in mind for a future DLC.

11 Tiny Tina's Wonderlands – Dreamveil Overlook

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Dreamveil Overlook DLC

The Plot: The Dreamveil Overlook area features several DLCs (Coiled Captors, Glutton's Gamble, Molten Mirrors) that let players peer into a different dimension through a magic mirror. Similar to the Headhunter DLC, players must complete a short mission to obtain the final rewards.

The Dreamveil Overlook DLC isn't as lengthy as the other entries here, but it provides players with plenty of end-game loot that will help them complete the Chaos Chamber a lot more easily. Moreover, players can fight powerful raid bosses that will force them to think outside the box, so fans must be ready to rethink their builds before fighting them.

10 Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – Claptastic Voyage

SYS_ADMIN NPC from Claptastic Voyage in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

The Plot: Handsome Jack discovers that Claptrap has a top-secret code embedded in its system. So, Handsome Jack digitizes the Vault Hunters and has them locate the code within Claptrap's mind, but reaching the code will not be as easy as he thought.

Claptastic Voyage was a short but memorable Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel DLC campaign that featured ten missions filled with sarcastic but funny Claptrap dialogue. Unfortunately, this DLC lacks replayability and legendary loot, which is why it's not ranked higher. But, Claptastic Voyage at least showed players how crazy (annoying!) the mind of Claptrap is.

9 Borderlands 2 – Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt

Sir Hammerlock from Borderlands 2 in the DLC Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt.

The Plot: Sir Hammerlock sends the Vault Hunter to the continent of Aegrus (one of the many interesting lands in the Borderlands universe) to uncover exotic creatures. But, Professor Nakayama declares himself the new archenemy of the Vault Hunters and is set on destroying them.

Players wanting to continue the Borderlands 2 storyline will have hours of fun playing Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, since it adds five main missions. Additionally, this DLC added a new raid boss, Dexiduous the Invincible, that tests players' gun skills. The only downside of Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt is that most bosses are difficult to beat solo, which means players will need to team up.

8 Borderlands 3 – Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot

Jackpot Boss from Moxxis Heist of the Handsome DLC in Borderlands 3.

The Plot: Handsome Jack's space casino has long been forgotten until Moxxi discovers it and wants to plunder its riches. So, the Vault Hunter is tasked to help her eliminate the remaining robot staff for a cut of the loot.

Despite Borderlands 3's rocky reception (even though it was the fasting selling 2K game), Moxxi's Heist significantly changed the tide. It added over 30 new enemies, multiple skins, heads, and emotes to the game. But, those wanting to play this DLC should come prepared with corrosive-type weapons since almost all the enemies are robots.

7 Borderlands – The Secret Armory of General Knoxx

Flamethrower Crimson Lancer from The Secret Armory of General Knoxx in Borderlands.

The Plot: Crimson Lance leader General Knoxx launches an attack to control the Parched Fathoms of Pandora. So, it's up to the Vault Hunters to stop General Knoxx and loot his famous armory.

Borderlands' then-largest DLC campaign, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, added over 40 new missions and many new enemies. Players also gained three new vehicles: Monster, Lancer, and Racer, which they could use to fight new vehicle-type enemies. While it isn't the best DLC, it showed players what Gearbox had in store (in terms of size) for future content.

6 Borderlands 2 – Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage

El Salvador Fighting Piston The Cheater in the DLC Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage from Borderlands 2

The Plot: Mr. Torgue invites the Vault Hunter to a special tournament in the Badass Crater of Badassitude. Once there, the Vault Hunters must fight their way to the top and become the #1 Badass on Pandora.

This DLC campaign added over 6 hours of content since it featured several main and side missions. On top of that, Gearbox introduced players to a fun new horde mode, which was a free-for-all combat-styled game mode. But, being a Mr. Torgue-focused campaign, players should expect a lot of EXPLOSIVE damage.

5 Borderlands 3 – Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck

Psycho Krieg Waiting to Give the Player a New Mission In Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck from Borderlands 3

Plot: Interested in understanding the minds of the psychos of Pandora, Patricia Tannis has begun to probe the mind of Krieg. But, she'll need the help of the Vault Hunter to continue her study.

Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck DLC is undoubtedly one of the funniest DLC campaigns Gearbox has released. The storyline alone makes this DLC one of the funniest DLC campaigns since it's filled with funny (and questionable) moments. And players familiar with Borderlands 2 will notice a lot of "friendly" faces, which is a nice callback to the psycho-filled Borderlands 2 days.

4 Borderlands 3 – Guns, Love, and Tentacles

Wainwright Jakobs (R) and Sir Hammerlock (L) from Guns, Love, and Tentacles in Borderlands 3.

The Plot: After years of being apart, Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs will be married on the frozen wasteland of Xlourgos. Unfortunately, a fanatical cult leader kidnaps Jakobs, so the Vault Hunters are in charge of saving the groom from the clutches of the Bonded.

Guns, Love, Tentacles is among the best Borderlands 3 DLCs since it adds over 15 new main and side bosses. However, these bosses are no walk in the park, so knowing which Vault Hunter is the best in the game will be the key to victory. But the story is what makes this DLC one of the best, especially if the player knows about Sir Hammerlock's troubled past.

3 Borderlands 2 – Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty

The Small Town of Oasis from Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty in Borderlands 2

The Plot: Marcus tells The Vault Hunters of a hidden treasure located in the small town of Oasis. But, to find the treasure, the Vault Hunters must join Captain Scarlett, who inevitably double-cross them.

Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty was the first Borderlands 2 campaign released and introduced players with a new weapon class: Seraphs. And as players can expect, the map was filled with loot, especially after defeating the final boss, Leviathan. And because of the fun boss fights, this is a DLC worthy of the Tiny Tina's Wonderlands treatment!

2 Borderlands 2 – Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary

Colonel Hector Boss from Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary in Borderlands 2.

The Plot: After the events of Borderlands 2 and Tales from the Borderlands, Colonel Hector takes hold of Sanctuary. Eith the help of Lilith and the Crimson Raiders, the Vault Hunter must defeat Colonel Hector and take control of Sanctuary once again.

Related:Tales from the Borderlands' Fiona Should Be A Playable Vault Hunter In Borderlands

Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary was a huge surprise for fans of the series since Gearbox released it years after Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel support had ended. This DLC campaign introduced new weapon rarities, a higher level cap, and the choice of starting the game at level 30. Undoubtedly, it was a great way of whetting the fanbase shooter-looter appetite months before the release of Borderlands 3.

1 Borderlands 2 – Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep

Psycho Fighting an Orc Captain in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep from Borderlands 2.

The Plot: Tiny Tina invites the Vault Hunter to play a game of Bunkers and Badasses, similar to Dungeons & Dragons. The game's objective is to save the queen from the evil grips of the Handsome Sorcerer.

There's a reason why Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep became a stand-alone game, since this DLC campaign added so much to the already DLC-packed game of Borderlands 2. Players could fight hordes of fantasy-styled enemies, loot new guns, and even feed Eridium to Butt Stallion! However, despite the DLC's funny moments and unique gameplay, it's Tina's storytelling that makes this the best DLC campaign in the Borderlands series.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands 3 are out now for PC, Playstation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series S.
