The battle royale genre has boomed after the past few years. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds started the whole craze, although it was never the first battle royale game. Since its surge in popularity, a slew of games has entered the landscape. Games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends have done a successful job of standing out and creating names for themselves.

Of course, not every battle royale game can be successful. There are plenty of good battle royales games, but there are some not so good battle royale games. This list excludes all of the aforementioned games to encourages players to try other popular battle royale games.

10 Worth Your Time: Cuisine Royale

All battle royales have some kind of angle to draw in players. Cuisine Royale's theme is using kitchen utensils and tools as weapons and armor. There are real pieces of armor in the world, but players may also use pots and pans to prevent damage.

Many fans of the game have stated it is a better PUBG in terms of graphics, gameplay, and polish. Cuisine Royale is free to play on Steam and continues to add new content. There is a slew of cosmetics players can obtain in this game too, which will require a lot of time when trying to unlock all of it.

9 Not Worth Your Time: Survival Frenzy

Survival Frenzy is another battle royale with a unique take. However, this game doesn't do a great job of executing it. Survival Frenzy pits normal people against each other. They are tasked with using day-to-day weapons to defend themselves.

The game is free to play, but many chastise the game for being too buggy and having clunky controls. This third-person battle royale game also has a steep progression system to unlock cosmetics. Lastly, the graphics of Survival Frenzy are nowhere close to what they should be in 2020.

8 Worth Your Time: Darwin Project

Darwin Project throws players together in an arena so millions of people across the globe can enjoy the player's death. Ten players are thrown into an arena that is televised to spectators. They must survive the cold, each other, and the audience.

Spectators are real players in this game, and the Show Director can take votes from them. The audience may choose to nuke a section of the arena or cause a gravity storm. Regardless, the gameplay changes can really turn the tide of the participants.

7 Not Worth Your Time: Islands of the Nyne: Battle Royale

Islands of the Nyne: Battle Royale had great potential. When it released into early access, many enjoyed the game for its mechanics and science fiction setting. Unfortunately,  in 2018, the game's development halted due to the game going free to play.

Since then, the game has received no updates or content drops. Many fans of the game stopped playing, so the community is dead. If this game were still active and the developers were updating it, then it may have been on the flip side of this list.

6 Worth Your Time: Super Animal Royale

Super Animal Royale features adorable sloths, pandas, and foxes killing each other over precious loot. Fans of the game report it is easy to learn the game with a quick onboarding process and plenty of fun gameplay.

Furthermore, the community is extremely friendly. Other features that receive praise include the load times, art style, and customization. Fans of battle royale games will enjoy this breath of fresh air. Drop onto an island with 64 other cute animals and shoot your way out of this top-down 2D battle royale.

5 Not Worth Your Time: Creative Destruction

Creative Destruction is not the most creative battle royale out there. A quick look at this game will reveal to players that its concept is ripped straight from Fortnite. From the art style to the gunplay and building, Creative Destruction draws all of its inspiration from the popular Fortnite.

Fans of battle royale games would have more fun with Fortnite than this uninspired replica. Just like Fortnite, Creative Destruction is free to play and sells itself by having destructible environments. Save your time and play Fortnite instead.

4 Worth Your Time: Maelstrom

Pirate ships battling on the sea.

One glance at Maelstrom might have you thinking it is a pirate game, but it is so much more than that. Maelstrom is a battle royale that pits ships against each other in a giant water arena. This fantasy world is full of creatures from the deep, whirlpools, and so much more.

Players progress outside of matches, which is different from other battle royale games. They may upgrade their ships and crew in order to have an edge on the high seas. The map is covered in loot, such as treasure chests. Take down enemy ships in order to take their loot and level up in this free to play battle royale.

3 Not Worth Your Time: P.A.S.

P.A.S. is a battle royale centered around a television show. Players are inmates who have been sentenced to death, and their only way of surviving is winning the game. 64 players are thrown into a match with zombies defending high-loot areas.

Many players report the game as being poorly optimized. The biggest critique of P.A.S. is bots. Players report the game is full of them and makes the gameplay less exciting. Many grant the game for being an interesting concept, but most of them are unable to stick with it.

2 Worth Your Time: Hunt: Showdown

Crytek has created a unique battle royale known as Hunt: Showdown. PC and Xbox (PS4 soon) players are tossed into the Louisianna Bayou, where they must hunt down a supernatural boss. Unfortunately, the map is littered with other hunters and NPCs.

Zombies, hellhounds, and water devils lurk all across the map. The game is set during the late 1890s, so weapons are crude and stylish. The most important detail is the game features the permadeath mechanic. Any hunter, equipment, and weapons players bring into the match could potentially be lost forever if they die. Be careful!

1 Not Worth Your Time: Fear The Wolves

The concept of Fear the Wolves is one of the best on this list, but the execution is done poorly. Players battle it out at Chernobyl, where they must fight against enemy players, radiation storms, and mutant wolves. Many love the concept and setting, but the gameplay weighs it down.

Fear the Wolves is $9.99 on Steam, which many believe is a reason it is not so successful. The player base is very small, so finding a match is difficult. Once a match was found, the physics and graphics of the game reduced the enjoyment.
