Anime has brought so many kinds of characters to life. There are strong females in its ranks that are memorable and range from having serious personalities to eccentric ones. Some of them even look cute and usually have innocent personalities that make fans love them; in fact, this concept basically led to the creation of a subgenre called "cute girls doing cute things". However, not all female characters fall within this category. There are some characters like Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer who are cute, but tough enough to behead demons with just a kick.

At school, Umaru Doma is an angelic girl with top grades and excels in everything else. However, once she’s home, she turns into a junk food-addicted and soda-drinking, raging otaku. She keeps this side of herself a secret from her classmates and her brother Taihei usually gives into her every whim to keep her from whining.

Nothing is wrong with playing video games and watching anime, but Umaru’s obsession and overall personality at home make her weird. Luckily, she has her brother Taihei and friend Nana Ebina who try to get her to broaden her horizons.

9 Saki Hanajima Just Being Herself (Fruits Basket)

Saki Hanajima Fruits Basket

Fruits Baskets has plenty of characters with weird habits, like Momiji wearing the girls' school uniform and Kagura very loudly and violently declaring her love for Kyo. However, none of them can compare to Saki Hanajima just being herself. From scaring the Prince Yuki’s Fan Club members away from Tohru to being overly dramatic to avoid physical education, Hanajima stands out as a cute but peculiar girl.

Hanajima's overall dark and gothic aesthetic makes her stand out among her peers and fits her personality perfectly. Though she comes off as mature, Hanajima is actually quite an airhead and usually has food on her mind. She knows most people around her (minus Tohru and Uotani) are a little scared of her because of her powers, but she doesn’t mind this and even uses their fear as a way of messing with them.

8 Yosano Akiko Ways Of Using Her Ability (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Yosano Akiko Bungo Stray Dogs

At first glance, Yosano looks sophisticated and carries herself with grace. She can heal others, but only if they’re on the brink of death. Yosano has developed a sadistic tendency to beat her opponents to near-death just so she can use her ability. She will keep doing this until she gets the information she needs or until she’s satisfied.

Because of this, even Yosano's allies are afraid to be treated by her because she actually enjoys doing this. Compared to anyone else, this is more disturbing, but among her allies, it’s more weird and scary.

Kanao Tsuyuri Demon Slayer

Before being adopted by the Kocho sisters, Kanao’s life was so rough that she couldn’t decide anything on her own. Shinobu pointed this out and even said that Kanao won’t eat unless she’s told to even if she’s starving. Kanae gave her a coin to help her make decisions since she had trouble on her own. This was Kanao’s way to make every decision by herself, even with trivial things like deciding if she should talk.

It wasn’t until Tanjiro flipped the coin for her to follow her heart that she started making decisions on her own. However, it was apparent that she was having a small mental breakdown before deciding this, showing that she relied on her coin a lot.

Mei Hatsume My Hero Academia

Her “babies” are equipment and gadgets she makes to support her peers. Even if her experiments fail, Hatsume doesn't see them as failures but as minor roadblocks to success. She’s not afraid to test out her equipment and usually tests them on her peers, with or without their permission.

Mei's love for her “babies” is quite weird, but fans know that Hatsume is one student to look out for. She’s helped Midoriya out by inventing his Air Force Gloves and Iron Soles to help him lessen any recoil from using One for All. Mei even helped Power Loader create Kaminari’s Sharpshooting Gear to help him aim better when using his Quirk.

5 Sasha Eating Food (Attack On Titan)

Sasha Braus Connie Springer Jean Kirstein Attack on Titan

Sasha was a great soldier and an amazing character, but fans of Attack on Titan will always know her as “Potato Girl”. Despite the grim world around her, Sasha was one of the characters that made it feel a little better for a few seconds.

When it came to food, Sasha’s appetite provided comic relief for viewers and made her peers look at her like she was quirky. She ate any food like it would be the last meal she would ever have, especially meat. Her gluttony provided more light-hearted moments in the show and added charm to her character and made her a little relatable.

4 Hyatt Dying Over And Over Again (Excel Saga)

Hyatt Excel Saga anime

It’s not something she can control, but Hyatt dies a lot throughout Excel Saga. She can go from having a normal conversation or receiving orders to spitting up blood and dying on the spot. It also doesn’t matter where she’s at, she could be walking down the sidewalk or in the middle of a mission when this happens. It happens so often that Excel will momentarily freak out, but go about her day because she knows Hyatt will come back to life.

The show doesn’t even go into detail about why this occurs, just that she’s from Mars and the Earth’s atmosphere is bad for her lungs. Other than that, the show more or less ignores her deaths and her allies will even leave her body behind. Even as much as she dies, she’s still more reliable than her partner, Excel.

She tends to space out which sends her into a trance-like state and separates her from reality. Ed gets easily distracted, tends to talk to herself, sings nursery rhymes, and rarely has a real conversation with the Bebop crew. She is usually seen talking to Ein and relates more to him than humans.

Despite her odd behavior, Ed is a genius and the crew can always rely on her to help them. Though Spike and Faye find her irritating at times, they go to her for help even though it might mean they won’t get a direct answer.

1 Narumi And Hanako Hanging Out (Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku)

Narumi Momose Hanako Koyanagi Wotakoi Love is Hard for Otaku

To the average anime fan, Narumi and Hanako’s hobbies as otaku are quite normal. They love reading manga, playing video games, and watching anime. Dig a little deeper and fans find out they’re far from average. Narumi writes and draws yaoi doujinshi as a side hustle, Hanako loves to cosplay as male characters, and both of them are hardcore fujoshi (women who love yaoi content). Hirotaka (Narumi’s boyfriend) doesn’t have any problem with this, but Kabakura (Hanako’s boyfriend) finds this weird.

The two of them love to discuss their favorite yaoi pairings even though it usually turns into a heated discussion because they can’t agree on some details. Hanako will purposely read yaoi content around Kabakura just to tease him and try to get him to read it, knowing he won’t agree. It also doesn’t help Hirotaka and Kabakura that Narumi and Hanako love to put them in yaoi-esque situations just to get a good picture. Both of these ladies are fun and charmingly weird on their own, but they are just better together since they’re two sides of the same coin.
