If there’s one thing gamers can expect every year, it’s a new Call of Duty game. The next game in the series is expected to launch this November in the form of the rumored Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and according to Activision, it is part of the best three year slate of Call of Duty games the publisher has ever had.
This claim was made by Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg during the company’s fourth quarter conference call to investors. While he didn’t officially announce Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, he did point out that the Black Ops series has had some of the most long-term player engagement for the franchise. He also said that there are “multiple different game universes” that the publisher can pull from in regards to Call of Duty, which seems to indicate that Black Ops 4 is indeed 2018’s entry in the series as rumored.
While there has yet to be an official announcement for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Hirshberg’s comments combined with previous evidence certainly suggests that it will be the next game in the series. The voice actor for Frank Woods leaked the game’s existence four months ago, and more recently, multiple sources confirmed to Eurogamer that the rumors are true and Black Ops 4 is due for release in 2018.
It looks like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the first game in the upcoming “three year slate” that Activision has in store for Call of Duty fans, but what will come in 2019 and 2020? Assuming the series sticks with its release pattern, 2019’s Call of Duty will be developed by Infinity Ward, the studio behind the Modern Warfare games. Considering Hirshberg’s comments about “multiple different game universes,” perhaps 2019’s Call of Duty will be Modern Warfare 4, or something along those lines.
2020’s Call of Duty, meanwhile, will likely be developed by Sledgehammer Games. Call of Duty: WW2 from Sledgehammer has been a massive sales success for Activision, and stands as the best-selling game of 2017. It’s possible that Sledgehammer will develop another World War 2 game, or maybe it will tackle a different historical conflict, like World War 1 or Vietnam.
Of course, the next Call of Duty games from Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer are a long ways off, so fans shouldn’t expect any concrete details on that front any time soon. In the meantime, fans should be able to look forward to a full reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, or whatever game Treyarch is developing, by the time E3 rolls around in June.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is rumored to be in development for unspecified consoles.
