The slime is one of the most iconic enemies in gaming. From their simplistic shapes and translucency to their goofy expressions and movements, slimes stand apart from the more complex and serious monsters featured in many RPGs. Despite their wholesome appeal, most games relegate slimes to the background, a minor enemy to be killed a few times in a dungeon and then forgotten.

Slime Rancher 2 takes the opposite approach, making these adorable piles of jelly the heart of the game. Raising herds of these squishy monsters and expanding the conservatory is easier said than done, however. For sure a cute game, there's a lot to learn in Slime Rancher 2. Here are some tips that every beginner should know in order to make their slime-raising dreams come true.

6 Mind The Diet

Slime Rancher 2 - Slimes

Slime Rancher 2 may be one of the most wholesome games around, but it can still be tricky. One can't expect to raise healthy, happy slimes if their diet is poor. Almost slime has its own preferred food, whether fruit, vegetables, or meat. Indeed, most slimes are extremely picky about what they do and don't want, which can make feeding time a chore, depending upon what slimes the player is trying to raise and what resources they have available.

There is one notable exception, however: the Pink Slime. A Pink Slime will eat anything the player wants to feed them, which simplifies the entire feeding process. If the player has other kinds of slime and wants to simplify the feeding process, there's an easy way to do it: feed the slime in question a Pink Plort to produce a Pink Largo which, like other pink slimes, will eat anything. In this way the player can streamline feeding time and make the entire ranching operation easier.

5 Upgrade The Vacpack

Like any good ranching game, making money quickly in Slime Rancher 2 can be a challenge, especially when the player is still learning the ropes. A common mistake that new players make when they finally get a decent amount of money is to invest it in additional slime corrals. After all, more slimes means more money, right?

There's a much better way to spend one's money early on, however: investing in Vacpack upgrades. Just as the Jetpack, Water Tank, and other upgrades were vital in the original game, upgrading the Vacpack to improve the player's capabilities is essential in Slime Rancher 2. Whether making chores easier or improving one's strength in combat, improving the player's Vacpack shouldn't be overlooked as the player explores Rainbow Island.

4 Coops And Gardens

Slimes are hungry. Very hungry. All the time. That means that feeding them is one of the player's top priorities if they want to keep these iconic creatures alive. While knowing what kind of food slimes like is step one, actually getting that food for them is another matter. Having home-grown food options rather than having to hunt around in the wild for resources is far more efficient, so the player will want to invest in Coops and Gardens as soon as possible.

Coops allow the player to keep Hen Hens and Roostro, while Gardens allow the player to grow fruit and vegetables. Whether one is raising slimes that pine for veggies or drool over meat, having Coops and Gardens will make sure that their dietary needs are always taken care of for minimal effort.

3 Beware The Night

Slime Rancher 2 - Night

Unlike many other creature-raising games, the player isn't bound by a stamina meter. If they want to work all night, doing one chore after another and never leaving their slimes' side, they can do that. Just because the game grants players the ability to work 24/7 doesn't mean it's advisable though, and there's a very good reason to call it quits when night falls.

Nighttime is when dangers such as Tarr Slimes become most active. The player will see them more often and in greater numbers at nighttime, and given how aggressive Tarr Slimes are compared to other slimes, it can be quite dangerous to venture outside at night if the player is not careful. Stick to the conservatory at night and only venture outside its confines during the day. All the necessary chores will still get done with time to spare, and the player will be much safer as a result of their decision. Once the player has more experience, they'll be prepared for whatever nighttime has to throw at them.

2 Invest In New Biomes

The more money the player has rolling in, the more options they will have when it comes to upgrades as well as expanding their slime ranch. How to proceed from here is a matter of personal taste, but it's hard to go wrong with the Grotto expansion. The Grotto is a unique biome that allows the player to keep light-sensitive Phosphorous Slimes alive. Improving one's ranch was a major part of the previous game, and the sequel is no different.

It's a pretty serious disappointment to nab one's first Phosphorous Slimes for the conservatory only to see them disappear come morning, so the Grotto is a great way to expand the player's slime menagerie and offer them some unique ranching opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have.

1 Know Your Slimes

Slime Rancher 2 - New Slimes

Every self-respecting ranch sim has a healthy selection of creatures for the player to choose to raise, each with their own unique appearances, mannerisms, pros, and cons. Slime Rancher 2 does a great job in that department, introducing a variety of new slime types to join those that were featured in the original game.

The new slimes include the Cotton Slime, Flutter Slime, Angler Slime, Batty Slime, and Ringtail Slime. One can't care for slimes well unless they understand their likes and dislikes. That only comes with experience, and one of the most enjoyable parts of the game is learning about how to best care for each type of slime. By studying slimes, paying attention to their movements, diets, preferred biomes, and other factors, the player can become a master slime rancher in no time.

Slime Rancher 2 is available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
