Horizon Call of the Mountain is the latest entry in the Horizon series. It picks up after the success of Horizon Forbidden West and was used as headline attraction for Sony's new and improved Playstation VR 2. As far as PSVR titles go, this is a must-have for players and easily stands as one of the best VR games out there. Horizon Call of the Mountain is a technical marvel. The graphics are incredible and the controls work well.

The latest entry in the series is a lot more linear and straightforward, clocking in at around half a dozen hours. It is a streamlined Horizon game focused on showing off the PSVR2, and it does that so well. The combat, albeit basic, is smooth and intuitive, and the climbing mechanics are a solid addition. The game's pivot towards a more linear and puzzle based approach works well in a VR setting. The game can be a little difficult for beginners to get into, so here are some important tips to keep in mind.

6 Fine Tune The Movement Options

Horizon POV

The game has two different styles of movement options for the player to choose between. The first is the more conventional analog-stick based system. While this style is a bit more basic, it feels a lot easier to use. This style shines in combat, and makes dodging and weaving around more effortless.

The second style is a gesture or movement-based system. In this system, players move around more, but also have access to two buttons to use. While this is the style more expected from a VR game, it can be a big leap for some. So it is best to try out both and stick with the one that feels better to use. Some players even find switching between both can be useful.

5 Preparation is Key

Horizon Climbing

As with any Horizon game, preparation is key. Players should craft plenty of healing potions to keep their health up, especially since the combat mechanics are unfamiliar for many. Moreover, players have access to the Focus ability. This ability allows players to scan the battlefield, look up specific enemies and find out their weaknesses.

Players can also set up different traps and tripwires, just like in the other Horizon games. If the player prefers a more stealthy and cerebral approach, it's best to take the time to prepare for it.

Players have access to a bow in this game, and using and upgrading it should be the top priority. The bow was the best tool available to Aloy in earlier entries, and it shines here too. Not only is the virtual archery one of the most satisfying aspects of any VR game out there, the bow is extremely useful too.

Players can upgrade their bow to increase its damage, as well as improve the handling and accuracy. Furthermore, there are certain skills players can upgrade that improves their archery. For example Hunter Reflexes, slows down time while aiming with the bow, in a similar vein to Shadow of War.

3 Arrows Are Key To Success

Horizon Call of the Mountain has tons of crafting options and elemental damage systems. Players can use these features to craft arrows of different elements, which are fit for different purposes. These can be used to exploit different weaknesses in certain types of enemies. Crafting equipment has always been important in the series, and it is relevant here too.

There are three basic kinds of arrows:

  • Blaze arrows are crafted using blaze cannisters and Ridge-Wood, and are effective against enemies susceptible to fire
  • Frost arrows slow down enemies and make them vulnerable to additional damage. They are crafted using Chillwater and Ridge-wood.
  • Spark arrows are exceptionally useful as they can briefly stun enemies and disable their abilities; additionally, they are effective against enemies weak to electricity. They can be crafted using Sparkers along with Ridge-wood

There are also more specific and advanced arrows that can be made. All of these use Ridge-wood along with extra materials. Players should try to manage their resources to prioritize arrows that work best against the imminent foe. As a general rule, Frost arrows are always helpful to buy time.

2 Make Use of Mounts

The game has a lot of different mounted units players can use for traversal, be it horses or robots. They all have their own characteristics attached to them. Players should experiment and find a mount that suits them. In addition to traversal, players can use mounted attacks to damage enemies, later in the game, some skills allow players to use special mounted attacks as well.

Players can also use their mounts as a distraction when the going gets tough. Mounts can be upgraded to improve speed, health and damage as well. Some newer players may ignore these uses, but utilizing mounts to their limits can lead to satisfying gameplay.
