The Beatles will continue to sing some happy tunes as their in-game music bested Guitar Hero 5 sales in September. Beatles: Rock Band sold 595,000 units in the opening month, which is a solid 100,000 more than their release rival Guitar Hero 5.

Downloadable Content has been quickly added to aid both sides in the fight. Most significantly, The Beatles' single "All You Need Is Love" single was downloaded more than 100,000 times, raising an astounding $17,000 for the Doctors Without Borders foundation. The track is also reported to be the fastest selling Rock Band track of all time, indicating that players who have Beatles: Rock Band are willing to download songs even though they can't be exported to the regular Rock Band series.

Market Analyst Jesse Divnich believes the fact that Guitar Hero 5 placed second (out of, you know, two) is due to fun thing we all call marketing:

In terms of Beatles outselling Guitar Hero, it simply comes down to marketing, and MTV Games spent more money than Activision on promotion and advertisement, which is a reversal from previous showdowns - Activision didn’t really go full throttle with its marketing as it has with previous Guitar Hero titles. Activision is likely holding back so it can support other music based games, such as DJ Hero and Band Hero."

Either way, both games continue to sell, and more downloadable content will be released. With Guitar Hero 5 coming out with several new songs sporadically and The Beatles' full Abbey Road album just released today, both sides will no doubt be preparing to face off yet again as the holiday season fast approaches: whilst Rock Band may have won this battle, the war is never over.

What side of the rhythm game war are you on? Rock Band, Guitar Hero... or both?
