Over the course of her journey in the first Bayonetta, the titular protagonist fights her way through scores of angels, and makes it look easy the whole while. But the obstacles in her way aren't always the many-faced or polearm-wielding variety, and are sometimes the environment itself. In order to successfully navigate their way through it, players will sometimes have to make use of Witch Time in order to strategically jump along falling debris, walk on water, or get through puzzles with short time limits.

Early on in Bayonetta, players will learn of Witch Time, one of the most important tools in Bayonetta's arsenal in her fight against the angels. Players can activate Witch Time in order to slow time to a crawl, enabling them to get a quick combo against the hordes that seek to do them harm. It goes a long way in making Bayonetta the unstoppable heroine she shows herself to be, but Witch Time is also a useful tool in solving puzzles the game throws the players way.

How to Activate Witch Time

In order to activate Witch Time, players must use Bayonetta's dodge just before an enemy's attack lands. Once players dodge, the screen will attain a purple tint as the slowed-down sound of a ticking clock will echo in the background, signalling that they've got a few precious seconds of Witch Time to do whatever they want. Even time itself is a plaything to Bayonetta, and the window of opportunity for activation of this ability is quite generous, but failing to take advantage of it results in damage, so remain vigilant.

How to Open the Door Using Witch Time

Bayonetta Door 1

In Chapter 2 of Bayonetta, players will encounter a door much like one they encountered in the previous chapter, one made of golden bricks where they'll need to unleash a combo to momentarily break apart. However unlike the previous chapter, this door will reconstitute itself very quickly, much too fast for them to get through, so they'll need to activate Witch Time to give them the chance.

From the door, players need to turn around and proceed down the street until they find two crystalline statues at the other end. Walk up to one and use the button prompt to lift them into the air with one of Bayonetta's other signature moves, then run back to the door.

When the button prompt is pressed again, the statues will call down a lightning bolt on Bayonetta's position, and players will need to dodge at the last second to activate Witch Time. Once they do so successfully, they should have enough slowed-down time to break the door and get to the other side before it reforms. Now with that little obstacle out of the way, players can get back to having fun as Bayonetta and beat down angels left and right, all the while looking good while doing it.

Bayonetta is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
