When it was first announced that Battlestar Galactica would be getting the MMO treatment, there was a large number of gamers who became very excited. Then, the news came down that the MMO would, instead of getting the dedicated title treatment, be a browser-based experience, and a lot of that excitement went away. In an effort to reignite that initial enthusiasm, a new gameplay trailer has been released for Battlestar Galactica Online.

Set within the world of Ronald D. Moore’s re-imagined series (sorry OG Battlestar fans), this MMO allows players to work alongside William Adama and the Colonial fleet, or serve under the various Cylon “skinjobs” as they work to destroy their old masters. Unfortunately, unless the developers at Bigpoint games have changed their minds, the gameplay of BSG will be relegated to space combat only (think EVE Online). On the bright side, everything from the Cylon Raider to the to the bulkier Colonial Raptor appear to be pilotable, depending on which faction the player sides with.

Is your fanboy heart ready to hear the drums of BSG again? If yes, then check out the trailer below:

What BSG might lack in appearance, as compared to a title like World of Warcraft, it more than makes up for in its experience. Just hearing the Battlestar Galactica theme play during the trailer should pique more than a few gamers’ interests.

Currently in open beta testing, Bigpoint Games hopes to have a finished game ready by the end of this year. While it's certainly not the flashiest of MMOs, or one to execute any particular style of gameplay first, the element that BSGO does have above all others is a fan base. With the recently cancelled Caprica and a backdoor pilot in the works for SyFy, this MMO could be the perfect way to keep up to speed on all the lore between the last and the next Ronald D. Moore creation.

What do you think of the Battlestar Galactica MMO now that you have seen some of its gameplay in action? Are there any beta testers out there who want to give their thoughts on the game so far? Feel free to do so in the comments below.

Battlestar Galactica Online has no current release date but will be available for the PC.
