When it comes to Battlefield, the main conversation topic for the past several months has been the next game in the series, which is expected to release this year and has otherwise been referred to as Battlefield 6. There have been numerous rumors and leaks surrounding it and, while there's still no official reveal, EA has finally shared some (admittedly vague) details about it. However, EA also mentioned something that wasn't already leaked in advance - a Battlefield mobile game.

Much like the main game, details on the Battlefield mobile title are incredibly scarce, but Oskar Gabrielson, the general manager of Battlefield developer DICE, has shared a few things. Firstly, the game is scheduled for a 2022 release. Secondly, DICE is working on it alongside Industrial Toys, a studio which already has prior experience with making FPS' for mobile (specifically its two Midnight Star games). It was bought out by EA back in 2018, making this its first title under EA.

Perhaps what's most interesting is that it won't be a port or scaled down version of the console game, but something entirely original and designed specifically for mobile devices and tablets. According to Gabrielson, it's currently in a testing period and he promises it to be a fully-fledged, skill-based Battlefield experience.

In retrospect, Battlefield receiving a mobile entry isn't all that surprising. Not only has mobile gaming become increasingly popular but Battlefield's biggest competitor, Call of Duty, currently has a very successful mobile game of its own called Call of Duty Mobile. While it may not be as prolific as its console counterparts, Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, it still has a sizable player-base and has been profitable for Activision. It even has its own esports scene now. Whether the Battlefield mobile game will also try to break into esports or attempt to emulate Call of Duty's free-to-play model are other questions entirely.

For the time being, Battlefield fans' focus is likely to be on the console release, considering it's coming out first. An actual reveal/trailer has been teased to arrive soon, but the rather frequent leaks may have already given away most of what the game will be about already. EA's recent update may have confirmed that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles (something which was previously rumored) and it apparently may not come with a single-player campaign mode, meaning it will strictly be a multiplayer experience like Warzone.

Battlefield for mobile is scheduled for a 2022 release.
