The Battlefield franchise has a long history of strong single-player offerings. The Bad Company spin-off series is beloved for its single-player stories, in particular, but titles including Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 1 are both remembered fondly, too. In this day and age, however, the cost of creating single-player campaigns and the demand for high-quality and accessible multiplayer games has led Battlefield to leave that legacy behind. That may be changing in the relatively near future, though.

A job listing for a position at Electronic Arts' Battlefield Seattle Studio, a new studio believed to focused on creating single-player campaigns for the Battlefield franchise, has helped paint a clearer picture. The job is a Design Director and their first responsibility is listed as defining and leading the "design efforts necessary for creating a best-in-class single player campaign experience." In other words, this role is explicitly going to be working on Battlefield single-player campaigns going forward.

For added clarification, part of the role overview for the Design Director role further describes the endeavor that Battlefield Seattle Studio is working on. It states that the role is to "embrace the core tenets of the Battlefield franchise" and to ensure that they are "woven through all layers of a masterfully designed single player campaign." As such, the Design Director will guide the development of an "amazing campaign" from concept to completion.

That the new Battlefield Seattle Studio is working on a single-player Battlefield campaign isn't entirely a surprise. A Twitter post from Lianne Cruz in April confirmed she'd been hired to the studio as its Animation Director. However, Cruz referred to the team as the Battlefield Campaign Seattle Studio, adding in the "campaign" as if that's how the team had been characterized to her. It was even affirmed by Battlefield game director Marcus Lehto, who responded and welcomed her to the team.

While single-player campaigns have only been absent for Battlefield 2042, there are going to be a lot of Battlefield fans happy to hear that future games in the franchise may once again include them. If anything, having a full campaign included in a full-priced game will make customers feel like they're getting their money's worth.

Even with this job listing, as well as others, and the Battlefield Seattle Studio being referred to the campaign studio, nothing is certain. It isn't clear if every Battlefield game will have single-player campaigns going forward. It isn't clear when these single-player campaigns will start coming to completion, either. It could yet be some time before Battlefield is doing single-player again, or it could be included in the next game. Time will tell.

A new Battlefield is currently in development.
