Patrick Bach Disappointed in Bad Company 2

It's said that you are your own worst critic and with Patrick Bach, producer of Battlefield 3, he's that in spades when it comes to DICE's previous release in the series, Battlefield: Bad Company 2. In fact, he's going so far as to say that he's ashamed of the game. Obviously, there are a great deal of people out there who think contrary to what Bach's opinion, but there's a reason he's being hyper critical.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal's Tech Europe, the question was posed whether Bach was proud of what he has achieved in the gaming industry. The interview focused mainly on what play-testing on Battlefield 3 was accomplishing, which is an interesting enough read all on its own, but we're talking about why Bach says he's ashamed of BC2.

In comparison of the two games, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 are two entirely different animals for a lot of different reasons. Most predominantly are the employment of Frostbite 2 engine in BF3 and the huge thematic change from the happy-go-lucky treasure hunting soldiers to a much more serious story that has a bit of real world implication. Bach's complaints stem more from the things DICE could have done better and here's what he said:

"I don’t know why, but I always feel ashamed about the games I’m involved in making. I can’t even bring myself to start up 'Battlefield Bad Company 2,' our last game, because I feel so ashamed. I know it is a great product but still I only see the things we could have done better."

Bach sounds like a director who doesn't watch a film during its first screening, but rather takes notes on everything wrong. Nothing bad about being critical about your own work, especially if you're focused on delivering high quality content to the gaming public, but Patrick can cut himself a little slack. Bad Company 2 was more fun than not fun, and most fans would call that a win in their book.

The Battlefield 3 beta is now underway, so players will see if Bach's words aren't too harsh. Still, the comparison of both game's should be seen as apples and oranges, they're both good for different reasons. Of course, DICE and EA are very keen on making sure that their shooter is the one that most people will be playing over another game, and they're not afraid to make fun of it.

Battlefield 3 releases October 25, 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
