Battlefield Bad Company 2 Maps

Today DICE announced the addition of four new maps to Battlefield Bad Company 2. Last Friday they teased an image of what appeared to be Oasis with only a title referencing that the developers were testing the map.

Of the four maps coming to the game, two are from the original Battlefield Bad Company. As we predicted earlier, Oasis will be returning with some improvements. Additionally, the popular Harvest Day map will be returning. The other two maps, Cold War and Heavy Metal, are brand new and originated from the single player modes of the game. We will have a full feature on what is to be the largest Battlefield map, Heavy Metal, ever created on Wednesday.

Battlefield Bad Company 2's level designer, Cristian Pavel, provided some inside information on Battlefields Blog that alludes to what updates will be seen in the latest VIP map pack. When asked how the Oasis map would be upgraded with the new features, Pavel stated there were not many changes.

"We first get a blueprint of the original level, then recreate it in the editor and start replacing the old BC1 assets with the new and optimized ones from BC2," said Pavel. "Think about the full destruction buildings and micro destruction materials like wood fences and concrete covers, which I know players love to tear apart. Then we dress it up with suitable ambient sounds for each part of the level, new weather settings, a variety of sand storm effects, and an overall war ambient setting around the combat zone to remind you that this is not a field trip -- that you are part of an ongoing war when you play."

Now that Destruction 2.o has been implemented into the game, Oasis' gold crates (now M- COM stations) will be placed outside of buildings or on the first floor, apposed to the rooftops. This will be due to the ability to have entire buildings collapse after taking enough damage. DICE has also raised the city's flat streets, which will now include a hillside like urban area in Arica Harbor.

"Oasis contains what Battlefield is all about. A variety of vehicles, from helicopters to tanks, jeeps, and boats. It also has enough space to let players show their creativity when driving these vehicles," said Pavel. "Oasis switches from open environment to close quarters urban combat in the last bases of the Rush game mode. This type of contrast in environment appeals to players, because it suits all four Battlefield classes, from sniper to assault."

With Call of Duty: Black Ops releasing this week, will this free VIP update stretch the lifespan for Battlefield Bad Company 2?
