Today has been a big day for Battlefield fans, and more information has just been revealed. The huge announcement surrounding the large-scale first-person shooter is the confirmation that Battlefield 6 will be officially revealed in June. But on top of that, DICE and EA have also made known that the new Battlefield title will be releasing on both current (PS4/Xbox One) and next-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S).
There have been plenty of Battlefield rumors over the past month or so. The most recent inside information actually hinted at the idea that Battlefield 6 would be a PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S exclusive; meaning it would not release on the PS4 or Xbox One. However, a recent EA earning's call has revealed that the shooter will release across generations.
EA and DICE have communicated that the newest Battlefield will take full advantage of the next-gen platforms (which is why many thought Battlefield would be next-gen exclusive). However, the game is also now set to release "cross-gen." EA CEO Andrew Wilson and CFO Blake Jorgensen shared this fact during the aforementioned recent EA earnings call. Jorgensen specifically said that Battlefield 6 will play "great on either console."
The team also doubled down on the idea that the next-gen versions of the game will have extra bells and whistles, however. As Jorgensen said it will feel "special." It could be that the game will come with its own mechanics, game modes, and/or features. It also could simply be that Battlefield 6 will play better, run better, look better, etc. on next-gen thanks to optimized and overall better technology.
There are two ways to look at this confirmation from DICE and EA. On one hand, there are still plenty of gamers out there that have not been able to get their hands on an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. So being able to play the new Battlefield and not being left behind is very nice. On the other hand, however, many will be frustrated by the idea that Battlefield could be held back with needing to be developed for two generations (especially with cross-play between generations and consoles a likely proposition).
There are still so many possibilities with the popular shooter, including the rumor that Battlefield will have a battle royale and a separate free-to-play element. That could certainly mix things up as well. All of those answers could be coming in just a month when EA reveals the full game.
