Earlier this year, Sony’s reluctance to allow cross-play between PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch players on Fortnite raised some questions about the feature being included in other popular multiplayer games. It seems that one such publisher looking at the possibility of including cross-platform in future titles is Electronic Arts (EA).

Earlier this week, EA held a meeting to reveal first-quarter earnings for 2018, in which the publisher’s plans for the future were also discussed. In the meeting, EA CEO Andrew Wilson was asked whether including a cross-play feature in games such as the upcoming Battlefield V was being considered. In answering the question, Wilson responded by stating that the publisher had been looking at ways in which they could implement the feature in future games, particularly in titles that have a broad and diverse player base.

He went on to state that ensuring players will be able to play EA's games with family and friends on every potential platform will be a key part of EA’s development profile in future. Interestingly enough, Wilson suggested that a major shift is on the horizon, as he believes in 3-5 years "a great portion of game experiences will exist in the cloud."

EA is not the first major publisher to announce an interest in including cross-platform features in future multiplayer titles. Earlier this year, Bethesda Game Studios director and producer Todd Howard stated that the developer had been looking at including such features in Fallout 76 but had faced opposition from Sony.

While EA is certainly looking at implementing cross-platform play features in upcoming titles, it is not clear as to whether this includes Battlefield V, which is set to be released in a few months. With Sony currently holding a massive stake in the console market and refusing to allow PS4 players to play with people making use of other consoles, it may seem somewhat unlikely at this point. This is especially true when one looks at the fact that the console producer reduced to relent on this stance for Fortnite (which can be considered the biggest game in the world right now) only a month ago despite significant pressure.

With this said, there may be a chance that EA will be able to convince Sony to allow cross-platform play between consoles. The video game publisher is considered to be one of the biggest in the industry today and produces several massively popular titles and thus does have the potential to initiate change given enough pressure. This, however, remains to be seen.

Battlefield V will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 19, 2018.
