Fans inspired by the upcoming Battlefield 2042 have seemingly returned to Battlefield 4 in droves due to it being the last game in the franchise with similar weapons and gadgets. With all these new players, EA is keeping the gameplay going by releasing an acclaimed expansion for free.

Battlefield 4 persists to be the game many fans gravitate to when compared to the rest of the action-packed guns-blazing Battlefield franchise. The weapons and multiplayer are mostly balanced, vehicles are more enjoyable to operate, plus it has some of the best destructive maps around allowing for scenes to look straight out of an action movie.

With all this content in one game, fans don't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon with DICE adding additional servers to support the huge spike of players jumping back into Battlefield 4Now to keep the players fighting on the warzone, EA has made "Second Assault " available to Xbox One gamers free of charge. Being the second expansion for the first-person shooter, it features new guns and redesigned variants of Battlefield 3 maps.

The Battlefield 4 expansion adds five new weapons to the arsenal, these will be found on the loadout page where players can change their weapons, attachments or gadgets for their soldier:

  • F2000 - A bullpup assault rifle.
  • AS Val - A Soviet-made assault rifle.
  • DAO-12 - A revolver-like shotgun.
  • M60E4 - An American light machine gun.
  • GOL Magnum - A bolt-action sniper rifle.

Not only are the following popular classic maps returning from Battlefield 3, but they were further updated to allow for more destruction and franchise-staple "levolution" events. This means players can now interact with the environment, changing up the map from match to match.

  • Caspian Border 2014 - Caspian Border is a multi-faceted, vehicle heavy map that exemplifies classic Battlefield gameplay. This map is fit for all classes as a result of a wide variety of vehicles and different terrains.
  • Gulf of Oman 2014 - This Persian Gulf beach takes place during the night. The stakes are high for both sides as the Marines face possibly being driven into the sea and destroyed. The MEC forces could lose a key airbase and open the door for US forces to take strategic oilfields.
  • Operation Firestorm 2014 - This map now features many open fires with numerous explosive objects laying around the map that can trigger more fires, such as oil spills that can be lit by explosives.
  • Operation Métro 2014 - Operation Métro is set in Paris, France, similar to Seine Crossing, but takes place in a park, the underground metro system, and a cafe surrounded by apartment buildings and the Paris Stock Exchange.

Speaking of massively destructible environments, DICE revealed that seven maps will be available on Battlefield 2042's October 22 launch. Naturally, EA already intends on adding further maps post-launch. It was even confirmed recently that classic maps from previous games would be added as part of the Battlefield Portal game mode.

The developer also noted that AI bots will be included in Battlefield 2042 to fill the massive 128-player maps, should there be any trouble filling the lobby with real players. Furthermore, the co-op options allow players and their teams to compete against bots in a lobby, as well as being the sole person in a bot-filled lobby.

Battlefield 4 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
