While there have been plenty of Battlefield titles since Battlefield 3 originally launched, to many fans none of the newer games have been able to live up to the 2011 release. For some, Battlefield 3 is where the franchise set its standard, and recent entries in the Battlefield franchise have failed to live up to it. With the critically panned launch of Battlefield 2042 still fresh in fans' minds, one team of modders has set out to give one of the series' older games a fresh start.

This is where the Battlefield 3 Reality mod comes in. Inspired by the Reality Project for Battlefield 2, the Reality mod takes the original game and completely overhauls some key elements. The UI, for example, looks entirely different from that of Battlefield 3, giving players fewer elements on their screen to improve the tactical experience. Gameplay will have a more tactical focus as well, which will provide a more "meaningful" experience, according to the developers behind the Reality mod.

Alongside key changes to the gameplay and UI, a new day and night cycle will be introduced, as well as models, maps, and plenty more extra content for the original game. Despite the modding team promising a more tactical experience, Battlefield 3's Reality mod will also allow for over 100 people on a single server, meaning some of that typical Battlefield chaos could also feature should players be so inclined. With fans still disappointed over DICE and EA's handling of Battlefield 2042, they'll likely be glad they can turn to these community projects if they want a Battlefield experience more tied to the franchise's origins. Anyone looking to download the Battlefield 3 Reality mod can do so now from the Venice Unleashed website.

Venice Unleashed is another ambitious Battlefield 3 mod that was in development for just under five years before it eventually released in late 2020. It added private, moddable servers to Battlefield 3, allowing for other mod creators to make more major alterations as shown by the release of the Battlefield 3 Reality mod.

While there were rumors of a potential Battlefield 3 remaster last year, it seems less and less likely now that one will be released. DICE has stated on multiple occasions that it is still focused on elevating the experience of Battlefield 2042, hoping to turn around the reputation of that game before the release of the next Battlefield title. With the future of the series looking like it will only depart further from games like Battlefield 3, the Reality mod may give players of the 2011 franchise favorite a new and nostalgic reminder of what made that game so great.

Battlefield 3 is available now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
