While social commentary is nothing new in the world of video games, Battlefield has not been a franchise to offer its serious or humorous takes on the world. DICE and EA often take inspiration from the state of the world to inform the game, especially in modern settings, but that's typically as far as it goes. However, Battlefield 2042's newest trailer offers a take on one of the best NFL QBs of all time that while meant as a joke, may not be entirely out of the question.

As the title implies, Battlefield 2042 flings players into the near-future amid a new war between the United States and its allies against Russia and its own allies. The game will be foregoing single-player this time around, focusing purely on the multiplayer experience across its three modes - All Out War, Hazard, and Portal. The series signature destruction is back as well, bolstered this time around by severe weather events like tornadoes and tropical storms breaking out mid-match.

All this is front-and-center in the game's latest trailer, but the most outlandish claim DICE makes involves NFL quarterback Tom Brady. As the typical Battlefield chaos is on display, a soldier stops momentarily to observe a holographic sign saying a then 65-year-old Brady is the 2042 NFL MVP. Assuming he did not win another league MVP award between 2021 and 2042, it would be the fourth in his illustrious NFL career.

Despite being 44-years-old heading into the 2021/2022 NFL season, Tom Brady is playing as well as he ever has going into his second season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady is looking to defend his seventh Super Bowl win, his first with the Buccaneers and the second in the team's history. He is also set to stay with the team through the end of the 2022 season.

The irony of the trailer's joke is while it is unlikely this would ever happen, Brady's career has seen him define the career and lifespan of quarterbacks in the NFL. American football is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world that requires players to get beat-up on a weekly basis starting from youth. For most players, it results in relative short careers which average just over 3 years.

Despite pushing 45, Brady is playing as well as he ever has and almost single-handedly turned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into perenial Super Bowl contenders. His move to Florida was also enough to convince his longtime tight end and fellow former New England Patriot, Rob Gronkowski, to quickly end his retirement and sign with the Buccaneers.

Battlefield 2042 is currently scheduled to release on November 19, 2021, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
