While Battlefield 2042 isn’t available yet, its specialist system is already proving to be a controversial feature. It’s one of the most fundamental changes that the franchise has made in years, and reactions to it have been mostly negative. The system was addressed directly in the Battlefield 2042 beta feedback post that EA made a few days ago, but fans are still concerned. One particular issue seems to be the Specialist Ji-Soo Paik.

As noted by Gamepur, reactions to Ji-Soo Paik, who was revealed alongside several other Specialists, has a suite of abilities that seem a lot like popular hacks or otherwise have a high probability of being overpowered. When a player shoots at Ji-Soo Paik, they’ll immediately be highlighted due to her trait Return Fire. Visibility is an important factor in many of Battlefield 2042’s engagements, and Return Fire tips the scales.

Return Fire isn’t the only problem, though. Ji-Soo Paik also has an ability called the EMG-X Scanner that allows her to see nearby enemies through walls. So far, it’s been compared to wall hacks due to its ability to reveal enemy locations, which is a particular point of contention. Especially on urban maps, hiding in a particular location can be instrumental to holding or taking an objective. The flip side of the argument is that it helps with campers, but it’s not clear if that will assuage concerns or not.

A large part of the controversy surrounding Specialists has stemmed directly from the potential for overpowered abilities. Ji-Soo Park is particularly poignant here, as her abilities do seem somewhat antithetical to fair Battlefield gameplay. Of course, feedback is an important part of any online game, and Battlefield 2042 is no exception. EA has been transparent about changes coming out of the technical preview, and there will likely be more transparency as time goes on.

Still, that doesn’t do much to address current concerns. Because Ji-Soo Paik wasn’t in the Battlefield 2042 beta, it’s difficult to tell how the Specialist will perform when the game goes live. It’s possible that fans’ fears will be unfounded, and that the Specialist manages to walk the delicate line of being considered “balanced.”

On the flip side, there are plenty of fans that want to see the Specialist system abolished entirely. There are some glaring issues with it, like the fact that all Specialists are available for both teams, making it harder to identify friends and foes. EA is promising changes in the final game that will make that on-the-fly identification that will make everything easier, but fans will have to wait and see how that shakes out.
