Battlefield 2042 has released a few details about two of its upcoming seasonal content releases, providing a few details on what players should expect from Season 4 and Season 5 in due time. According to the developer, DICE, there's a slew of content planned for release in the coming months, but certain features of the game do appear to be winding down, content-wise.
It goes without saying that Battlefield 2042 has had a rough time since its release. Instead of receiving critical acclaim and fan adoration, the game was widely criticized for its revamp of core Battlefield principles and an overall lack of content and features, but DICE and EA have managed to turn things around to a point where 2042 could maintain its stride, and this will seemingly continue for some time yet.
While Battlefield 2042's Season 2 update made the move in the right direction, DICE intends to continue this streak in the future, too. To that end, Season 3 will introduce reworked versions of the Manifest and Breakaway launch maps, with Discarded slated for Season 4 and Hourglass sometime later on. Season 4 is slated to release early in 2023, marking the end of BF2042's Year 1 of content, with DICE announcing a new specialist, Battle Pass, military hardware, and a linear CQB map for players to duke it out on.
While one could certainly make the argument that Battlefield 2042 is yet another miss for the franchise, DICE did end up deciding to reel in some of its more experimental aspects, Specialists being a prime example. DICE will introduce classic combatant classes to the game with Update 3.2 early next year, and Season 4 will add the last distinctive Specialist to the game as a member of the Recon class. Season 5 has no firm release date as of right now, but DICE has promised that it would be "consistent" with other seasonal releases, other than the lack of a new Specialist.
Players who'd like to get a better sense of what's to come in Seasons 3, 4, and 5 may wish to look at Battlefield 2042's Season 2 content in more detail, then. With DICE mentioning that the game's future seasonal content releases would introduce a similar amount of content as the available ones have, the precedent appears to have already been set and established by now.
As admirable as it might be that DICE could turn things around for Battlefield 2042, the fact of the matter is that there are some things the next Battlefield needs to get right, and the developer will be hard-pressed to release a performant title when BF2042 winds down. It's still early for these discussions for the time being, perhaps, but it remains to be seen how much more content DICE has in store for 2042.
