Battlefield 2042's open beta is kicking off next week, and in light of that, DICE has revealed its "Positive Play" initiative. Essentially, the idea behind Positive Play is to keep Battlefield 2042 online interactions from being toxic, though one aspect of this has caused somewhat of a stir with the game's community.
It's been confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will have an always-on profanity filter to censor in-game text, with no option to toggle it on or off. Some fans aren't happy about this because Battlefield 2042 will an M-rated video game, so they feel as though they should be able to swear while communicating with text chat. In fact, part of the reason why the ESRB has given Battlefield 2042 its M for Mature rating is due to "strong language," meaning the in-game characters will be swearing and using words that players aren't allowed to use.
Other features that are coming to Battlefield 2042 as part of its Positive Play initiative include the ability to block specific players from sending messages, mute in-game text and chat, and report players for misconduct. Positive Play will also empower players to report Battlefield 2042 cheaters as well.
Profanity filter should be a toggleable option in the Menu, Battlefield is an M-Rated game there is no reason why we shouldn't be given an option to Disable it.

The profanity filter may be puzzling to some, but it's probably less about the words being used and more to do with how people could potentially use those words to abuse others online. By censoring certain words, Battlefield 2042 developer DICE may be able to tone down abusive language through its text chat. However, it will be interesting to see if some bizarre words are censored this time around or if it will stick to actual profanity.
Battlefield has censored strange words in the past through its profanity filters, and it's possible the same thing will happen with Battlefield 2042. It's a little too early to get worked up about that, though, as the game hasn't even had its open beta yet and is still over a month away from its release date.
The profanity filter isn't the only concern that Battlefield 2042 fans have leading into the open beta. The Battlefield 2042 default grenade button on consoles also has some fans scratching their heads, but it's best for everyone to wait and see how it all works for themselves. Those with early access can jump into the Battlefield 2042 beta on Wednesday, October 6, while the truly open beta starts on Friday, October 8 and lasts through October 9.
Battlefield 2042 launches November 19 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
