Battlefield 2042 is just over a week away from launch and fans of the Battlefield franchise are anxious to play the game and see what's new. Perhaps the most exciting new feature is Battlefield 2042's Portal platform, a new way for players to create custom games using assets from past Battlefield games including Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Anticipating players' excitement for Portal, EA DICE has gone ahead and launched the platform's web-based editor early.

That's right, Battlefield 2042's Portal platform does not require the purchase of Battlefield 2042 to access. Instead, it's available to everyone with an Electronic Arts account in good standing. Those interested in making a new game mode for Battlefield 2042 can jump in, customize an experience to their heart's content, and then save and share it via an Experience Code. That code can be input in-game to launch a server for the customized Portal game mode. Alternatively, a URL can be shared with others, who can build their own Portal game mode based on what came before.

As of today's launch, Battlefield 2042's Portal mode opens up five different game modes for customization, including Conquest Large, Conquest, Rush, Free-For-All, and Team Deathmatch. Using Portal's tools, users can adjust all five of these game modes in a significant number of ways. Map rotation, ruleset adjustment, gameplay modifiers including vehicle and AI options, and restrictions tied to teams, characters, weapons, gadgets, and more make up the choices players will have on-hand.

Consider those the basic editing options, however, because Battlefield 2042's complex Portal Rules Editor is also unlocked. For the time being it's only available for the Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch game types, but it's robust. Using the Rules Editor, Battlefield 2042 players will be able to script truly complex game modes. The extent of what's possible is up to creators to discover.

Those uninterested in creating will still be able to reap the profits of Battlefield 2042's Portal system very simply. To start, EA DICE will have a rotation of featured customized experiences available via quickmatch in-game. Those who've dipped their toes in the water and who are ready to swim can explore the in-game Server Browser where all manner of custom experiences will be waiting.

Obviously, Portal users will have to wait until Battlefield 2042 launches before they can start actually playing their custom game modes. Until then, the Portal editor is freely available for creators to experiment with. It's just enough time to create some exciting potential game modes, if not the more complex creations that will arrive in the months to come.

Battlefield 2042 releases November 19 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
