The Battlefield franchise has historically been a hectic depiction of battles in a variety of wars across the world. This has led to a lot of unique opportunities that haven't been seen in other games in the first-person shooter genre. This has previously included heavily destructible environments that lead to huge cinematic moments unlike many other games. The most recent entry went back in time to give players an up-close-and-personal look at the tragedy and horrors that took place during World War 2. However, it seems that developer DICE might be going in a different direction entirely with Battlefield 2042.

During E3 2021, Battlefield 2042 was revealed to an eager fanbase. Their patience was finally awarded with a gameplay trailer that showed off some new gadgets, as well as introducing the new dynamic weather systems. Both of these new additions are reminiscent of another popular action franchise. Swinging from the metal structures while blowing up a helicopter seems to be more comparable to the Just Cause games than Battlefield. The new trailer for Battlefield 2042 was filled with similarly over-the-top explosions and fast-paced action that is sure to make fans of the Just Cause series interested.

Grappling Hook and Gadgets in Battlefield 2042

Most modern military shooters rely on the player knowing how to use simple equipment such as grenades, UAVs, trip-mines, and more. Many fans have come to expect these types of equipment available to them, and shooters would feel incomplete without them. However, it seems that Battlefield 2042 will add a host of new gadgets to their soldiers' repertoire. This includes new equipment that will increase the player's mobility across the map.

In the new Battlefield 2042 trailer shown at E3 2021, soldiers were shown using a variety of new gadgets. One new gadget shown early in the trailer shows a soldier gliding across the sky in a wingsuit. It looks similar to the same kind of wings that Rico uses in Just Cause. One of the most iconic pieces of gear in the Just Cause series is the grappling hook, which allows Rico to pull himself across the map at lightning speeds. Now it seems that Battlefield 2042 will be taking a hint from the unbelievable mobility in Just Cause.

Battlefield 2042's Dynamic Weather Systems

The gadgets and gear aren't the only thing that looks similar to the Just Cause series. In the latest entry, Just Cause 4, the game introduced a whole new weather system unlike anything that has been seen in video games before. However, the next generation of consoles will be able to evolve this mechanic, as shown by the destructive weather Battlefield 2042's new gameplay trailer. A giant sand-twister can be seen making its way across the map as the player is using their wingsuit. A second later, a car is yanked into the tornado.

It's not that Battlefield 2042 is a carbon copy of Just Cause, but the similarities are noticeable. It could be that Just Cause 4 was ahead of the rest in creating dynamic weather systems, or the developer's over at DICE might've just enjoyed the mechanic's concept a lot. Nevertheless, the sheer amount of destruction paired with the Battlefield 2042's level of mobility looks to take a few cues from the chaotic Just Cause series. These exciting changes will hopefully make up for Battlefield 2042's lack of singleplayer campaign about life in 2042.

Battlefield 2042 is releasing on October 22 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
