As E3 2021 drew closer, the leaks and rumors surrounding a new Battlefield seemed to intensify. Screenshots seemingly leaked on a weekly basis and rumored details of Battlefield 2042 also appeared quite frequently, with many of it turning out to be true such as the lack of a single player campaign. It wasn't long before EA and DICE decided to pull the curtain back on the new game completely, giving fans a brief look at what Battlefield 2042 has in store.

While the first trailer was created in-engine, much of what was shown teased what fans could expect from the actual gameplay. Maps look to be massive, each with their own story reasons for the in-game fighting, while destruction makes a big return and enhanced by in-game events and weather effects. As the first trailer continues to get dissected, fans didn't have to wait long as actual multiplayer gameplay was finally revealed at Microsoft's E3 2021 press conference.

The debut Battlefield 2042 pre-alpha footage showcased a 128 player Conquest match with a ton of vehicle combat as well as on foot. New gadgets including a grapple gun was showcases, allowing the player to take a shortcut over a huge gap to a hanging crane. The wingsuit also was utilized and it looks to take the place of the parachute in many ways. After jumping off of a building, the player activates it and is able to glide through the map while falling.

However, for many, the showstopping moments came from the weather which causes the maps to change on the fly. The tornado from the original announcement trailer was shown again this time on the Hourglass map causing a lot of damage as well as pulling objects, vehicles, and people if too close. On Renewal in Egypt, a huge dust storm could be seen taking over the map no doubt making it hard for players to see and likely to cause plenty of issues in the middle of a match.

Players also got a short glimpse at a fireteam in an elevator and using the relative quiet to modify their weapons on the fly. The player's UI appears around the gun, showing options they can change to from the optics, barrel attachments, grips, and ammo. This should be a big benefit for players who don't want to wait to change their loadout prior to respawning.

While this brief look will no doubt excite longtime Battlefield fans, there's plenty more coming between E3 and the game's eventual launch date in October. In addition to upcoming beta tests, EA Play Live is coming later in July than it's typical June timeframe. Fans can expect to see plenty more including a reveal of the third game mode which DICE LA has been working on and keeping secret.

Battlefield 2042 is releasing on October 22 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
