The next Battlefield game has yet to be revealed by DICE or EA, but the plan is to release it at some point later this year. While fans are waiting on more specific details about the new Battlefield game, developer DICE has offered an update, revealing all three studios that are working on the game and explaining where it's at in the development process. It has also suggested that the rumors of the game being next-gen only are true.

The new Battlefield game is being developed by the largest team ever. While the core DICE studio is leading development, it is being assisted by Need for Speed studio Criterion as well as DICE LA. DICE has described the new Battlefield as a "jaw-dropping experience," that is at the end of its development cycle. According to DICE, it is playtesting the new Battlefield and focusing on polishing and balancing the game.

Again, specifics as to what the new Battlefield will entail weren't shared, but the developers did offer some more teases. According to DICE, the new Battlefield game will be everything that fans love about Battlefield games already, but taken to the next level. It's described as "epic scale" warfare filled with "crazy, unexpected moments" and "game-changing destruction." DICE is promising massive battles with a higher player count than before. And it's said that all of this is being "brought to life" thanks to next-gen consoles and PCs.

While these statements lack details, they do seem to allude to what fans have been hearing about the new Battlefield game through leaks. Leakers have said that the new Battlefield game will be next-gen only, so that it's not held back by the PS4 and Xbox One's lack of horsepower compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X. This statement doesn't outright confirm that, but it does seem to point in that direction.

Leaks have also teased that the new Battlefield will have an especially high player count, and that seems to be supported by DICE's statements as well. The rumors say that matches in the new Battlefield game will have up to 128 players at any given time, but an exact player count wasn't provided by DICE. Leaks have also suggested that Battlefield 6 will have a battle royale mode, and so that will likely have a high player count as well.

As for "game-changing destruction," previous leaks have said that the new Battlefield will have destructible environments on a scale never seen before, with players reportedly able to level entire cities. Whether or not that's exactly how Battlefield 6's destructible environments play out remain to be seen, but fans should be able to look forward to a proper reveal for the game soon.

Battlefield is in development for PC and next-gen consoles.
