The anime medium features diverse characters with interesting abilities, and since anime shows are predominantly works of fiction, it comes as no surprise that characters with bizarre traits and quirks exist across the medium. For instance, anime series such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures and My Hero Academia never fail to serve up characters with abilities that would make many viewers go, “how does that work?” Yet, despite how unsettling these powers might be, the medium continues producing more, whether it be magic-based abilities or powers gained through rigorous training.

Perhaps the reason for the continuous churning out of anime characters with strange powers is the fact that it is what anime viewers love to see. In any case, there are many anime characters with powers that are as unsettling as they are useful, and here are a few of them.

7 Kōsuke Ueki – The Law of Ueki

Several strange and unique powers exist in the crazy world of The Law of Ueki, but not many are stranger than Kosuke Ueki’s recycling ability. This power allows Kosuke to turn pieces of garbage into any kind of tree instantly. While this ability may seem useless at first glance, Kosuke has utilized it to a competent level.

Using his intelligence and tree-making abilities, Kosuke has been able to beat powerful opponents like Mauro Taira with ease. For instance, in his battle against Maruo, Kosuke grew chestnuts from tree branches to defend against Maruo’s fire attacks.

6 Jurai Andō – When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace

As far as unhelpful anime abilities go, Jurai Ando’s Dark and Dark is among the leading ones. Jurai is a member of his high school’s Literary Club suffering from “chūnibyō disease,” who can manipulate a dark flame on his right hand. While this may sound like a powerful ability, it is ultimately useless.

The flame has been described as lukewarm and unable to set anything ablaze, essentially having no real applicability. Jurai later develops this power into Dark and Dark of the End. Still, just like the initial version of his ability, it is useless as it burns everything in its path and can only be stopped by amputating Jurai’s arm.

5 Monkey D. Luffy – One Piece

Luffy is the main protagonist of the well-renowned anime, One Piece. As the captain and leader of the notorious Straw Hat Pirates, he sets out to find the mysterious treasure left behind by a legendary pirate to become the Pirate King.

When Luffy was 7, he accidentally consumed the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a devil fruit that changed his physique to that of rubber. It endows his body with rubber-like qualities that enable him to stretch to boost the distance of his punches, kicks, and headbutts. Luffy can also twist, expand and ricochet off surfaces. Although Luffy could not control his rubber ability initially, he mastered it after twelve years of rigorous training.

4 Denji – Chainsaw Man

Left with the debt his father owed to the Yakuza, Denji is forced to hunt devils with his pet devil, Pochita, to pay the money back. Unfortunately, he is betrayed and murdered by the Yakuza, after which, Pochita becomes his heart. This fusion allows him to turn into the titular Chainsaw Man once he pulls a string on his chest.

Denji’s transformation into the Chainsaw Man is violent, as three chainsaw blades protrude through his head and hands every time he transforms, losing a lot of blood in the process. However, if Denji attempts to activate his powers without enough blood, his chainsaws become smaller and significantly weaker. With this power, Denji gains enhanced strength, durability, and stamina thanks to his abilities.

3 Mina Tsukuda – Lunar Rabbit Weapon Mina

Mina is a typical high school student who works as an announcer for "SpoLuna." After having a bad first day at work, she is informed that she will have the opportunity to compensate for her poor performance by interviewing a renowned baseball star. Unfortunately, aliens attack while the interview takes place, and Otsuki Miina, the Rabbit Warrior, appears to battle the aliens but is overpowered. However, a bizarre flying infant going by the name Nameless awakens Mina's abilities, transforming her into another Rabbit Warrior called Tsukishiro Miina.

As a Rabbit Warrior, she must consume a carrot to change into her superpowered alter ego. The necessity to consume carrots to activate her powers is made funnier because Mina detests carrots. She expresses this vehemently when she must morph into her alter ego.

2 Ayumu Aikawa – Is This A Zombie?

Surprisingly, Denji is not the only character that wields a chainsaw on this list. Ayumu is a boy murdered by a serial killer and then resurrected as a zombie. Following his resurrection, he gains the power to transform into a Mashou-Shoujo, a magical girl, after absorbing magic belonging to Haruna, a magical girl in training.

In his Mashou-Shoujo form, Ayumu can control magical barriers just like Mashou-Shoujo. However, he is completely unaware of this feature since he did not go through the curriculum in Villiers. Ayumu can also release 1000% of his Mashou-Shoujo form, allowing him to utilize more powerful attacks without putting any strain on his body.

1 Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is easily the most bizarre anime on this list. As he likes to be called, Bo-bobo is the unintelligible main protagonist with a huge golden afro and sunglasses. To stop the Murahage Empire from turning the entirety of the human race bald, Bo-bobo uses his Hanage Shinken, which translates to True Fist of the Nose Hair (a reference to the 80s anime Fist of the North Star).

When using his Hanage Shinken, Bo-bobo can extend his nose hairs to assault or entrap his opponents. However, since he is one of the few familiar with this technique, he believes it is sacrosanct and should not be abused.
