James Gunn recently clarified his stance on Superman and Batman's age in the DCU. His clarification was prompted by comments he allegedly made after announcing the initial DC slate.Batman was thought to be older than Superman in James Gunn's DCU, although there are still questions about the comic accuracy of this portrayal. Superman is reportedly 25 years old in the DCU, while the DCU Batman will have an established bat family and meet Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's biological son, in The Brave and the Bold.RELATED: Non-DCU Projects Like Joker and The Batman Will Have Clearer Labels In The FutureDuring the DC slate presentation, Gunn expressed that Batman will be “a couple [of] years older than Superman,” stating that this is “a world where superheroes exist and have existed.” While reports suggested a specific age for Superman, Gunn later clarified Superman and Batman's age in the DCU. He said that he simply noted Superman would be older and Batman might be slightly older. Still, there is only so much wiggle room for Batman's age when Damian is introduced.

James Gunn debunked Grant Morrison Batman adaptation claims for the DCU, but the DC Studios Co-Head circled back on this, stating on Twitter that Morrison's Batman run is, in fact, an inspiration for the DCU. In this storyline, Talia Al Ghul chooses Bruce to create what she considers the perfect genetic specimen, which is directly related to the fact that he is Batman, who she sees as her father’s successor. As a result, Talia does not meet Bruce until sometime after Year One, when Bruce is 26. To further this, Batman isn’t introduced to Damian until he is 10, making Batman 37 years old in the DCU. Even though this Batman will be younger than Snyder's adaptation, it potentially creates an even more significant age gap than in the SnyderVerse, despite Gunn stating that Cavill and Ben Affleck didn’t fit his vision for these characters.

The only way Batman could be younger than 37 is if Bruce and Talia met before he donned the cape and cowl. The motivations could remain the same, as Talia can still see Bruce as the ideal mate, but as someone who was at the top of their class in the League of Assassins rather than as Batman, assuming this version of Bruce trained there. This would make the entire Bat Family younger and closer in age.

Even though the characterizations may differ radically from Cavill's Superman and Batman, they might have more in common than fans initially anticipated. Either that or certain canon elements will change to make this Batman and his Bat Family younger to reflect a closer relationship with a younger Superman.
