There's no doubt of the success of the Batman: Arkham series games and how significant they are in the long line of superhero titles. It can even be  said that superhero games saw a new dawn thanks to Batman: Arkham series, as these games introduced a certain level of maturity in the story as well as the gameplay. While the Batman: Arkham series did its part to establish this, the new line of PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man games did its best to take it from there. In a way, it was the Batman: Arkham series that opened up the possibilities of dedicated, serious superhero games, which helped establish PS4's Marvel Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Earlier superhero games were more like variations of fighting platformers, be it in 2D or 3D. Many had repetitive level designs, no actual storyline to follow, and restrictive and tedious combat mechanics labeled superhero game. Those who remember the earlier Spider-Man games couldn't likely go back, no matter how good they seemed at the time. Now, it seems the genre has a real future with no small part played by the latest Batman and Spider-Man games.

The Batman: Arkham series games were among the first ones to create a detailed world for the player to explore, while keeping in mind the exact atmosphere they wanted to create for the game. This is something that the community had not seen before in superhero games. A major reason behind this is the fact that comic books and superheroes were not taken seriously outside pop culture for a long time. Obviously, they grew into more mainstream entertainment over time, but at least at one point, they were not as big as they are today. In terms of video games, the Batman: Arkham series set the playing field.

Now, it seems Spider-Man is picking that up and going forward with it; they could be be considered the Arkham of the Marvel gaming universe in terms of influence. The 2018 Spider-Man title was a breeze of fresh air for the fans of Spider-Man games as it was on a significantly higher league than the ones they had previously seen. In terms of combat mechanics, freedom of movement and exploration, stunning visuals, and many more, PS4's Spider-Man became a milestone in the genre of superhero titles.

Of course, the advancement of game development technology has something to do with it. The new line of Spider-Man games features visuals on a level the fans had not seen before in superhero games. However, what is significantly better than the previous Spider-Man games is the treatment of the storyline in the new ones. Again, the change of treatment of superhero films has had a lot to contribute to this. Overall, the latest Spider-Man games have had a bedrock to build themselves on, and Insomniac Games made sure that the end product was as amazing as the character fans are dealing with.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available now for PS4 and PS5.
