Parasite and Oscar winning director Bong Joon-ho has reportedly landed on his next project, a sci-fi movie, with The Batman star Robert Pattinson in talks to join the project.

The critically acclaimed filmmaker struck Oscar gold with his 2019 thriller Parasite, which became the first non-English language movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in history. Parasite alone brought in 263 million dollars worldwide and is gaining its own limited series on HBO. Since then, it’s been nearly 2 years since fans have seen Bong Joon-ho back in action, and the curiosity of what type of project he will seek out next has definitely been lingering for quite some time now.

Deadline reports Bong is in talks to write, direct, and produce a new film through his company Offscreen, along with Dooho Choi for Kate Street Picture Company and Plan-B. The sci-fi film still remains untitled and quite ambiguous in nature, although The Batman star Pattinson is in talks to star in the Warner Bros. flick. The film’s plot is based off of author Edward Ashton's upcoming novel titled, Mickey7. The book synopsis reads, “Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous -even suicidal- the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.”

If Pattinson is presumed to be playing main character, Mickey7, then he will find himself in a similar hero/leadership position that he takes on in his other upcoming film, The Batman. When Mikey7 does return to base, he realizes that a new clone, Mikey8, has replaced him. The fate of humanity's survival is in his hands, much like it is with the iconic character of Batman. The novel clearly seems to have some rich material to draw from.

However, Bong is a director who is known to take many risks and leaps when it comes to the adaptation process. In other words, he definitely makes it his own and isn’t afraid in the slightest to switch up the entire narrative, even if that means possibly disappointing loyal fans of the book. Either way, Bong and Pattinson will make quite the interesting and fierce duo together, regardless of what this project transforms into before it makes it to the screen.

The Batman will be in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
