The United States launched its first privately-owned manned spacecraft Saturday, sending Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket. Those astronauts wore flight suits far different than what Americans are used to from the days of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and they were apparently designed by the designer who worked on films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Forbes published an interview with Ironhead Studio's founder Jose Fernandez, who started his career on 1989's Gremlins and has gone on to major studio films like Batman v Superman, Thor, and 2004's Hellboy. Fernandez began working with SpaceX in 2016 after participating in a design contest he believed was for a film.

The designer said the suits' helmets were inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and the electronic band Daft Punk. Much of the planning and design was done alongside SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The idea of making spacesuits fit for the silver screen may hold more importance going forward, as there are plans to film a Tom Cruise movie aboard the ISS with NASA and SpaceX.
