Many fans will recognize the name Terry McGinnis as the young man who took on the role of Batman under the tutelage of an aging Bruce Wayne in the animated series Batman Beyond. Now, this concept artist has breathed new life into this version of Batman in an impressive piece of work that shows us what the character might look like in a live-action movie from The Dark Knight Trilogy helmer Christopher Nolan.

When most people think of Batman they think of billionaire Bruce Wayne, a character who has received countless live-action adaptations over the years, including in the upcoming Matt Reeves film titled The Batman. While Bruce may be the most recognizable Caped Crusader, but he's not the only character to take on the Batman alter-ego. Set in Gotham City in the year 2039, Batman Beyond was a DC animated series that ran three seasons from 1999-2001. Created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, it was the fourth show in the DC animated universe and a direct continuation of the original Batman animated series and its spin-off The New Batman Adventures.

Thomas du Crest is a UK-based concept artist who has worked on many big-name superhero films such as Spider-Man: Far From Home and Avengers: Endgame. You can check out some of his work on ArtStation, where you can see more of his Batman Beyond concepts. His version certainly brings to mind the Christopher Nolan Batman films, with their darker tone and more realistic design. Perhaps Nolan's Batman actor Christian Bale could one day reprise the role as an older Bruce Wayne. His version of the character did retire after the events of The Dark Knight Rises and with The Flash potentially opening up the multiverse, anything seems possible. Until then, fans will have to settle for the upcoming Matt Reeves film featuring a younger, amateur Bruce Wayne played by Robert Pattinson.

Batman Beyond

The son of a research scientist and an astronomer, McGinnis eventually fell into a life of juvenile delinquency after his parent's divorce. One day, while fleeing from a local street gang, Terry stumbles upon Wayne Manor, where he finds an aging Bruce Wayne now in his 70s. After his father is murdered, McGinnis is eventually recruited by Wayne to be the new Batman.

However, (spoilers) 15-years later it was revealed that McGinnis was actually the biological son of Bruce Wayne, and was engineered in an elaborate scheme by Project Cadmus head Amanda Waller to insure that Gotham would always have a Batman. McGinnis differed from his mentor in many ways. While he took up the signature look, McGinnis was significantly younger than Bruce was when he became Batman, and he struggled to balance his teenage life and crime-fighting career.

While Batman Beyond remains a popular entry for many DC fans, the character of Terry McGinnis has never been adapted in live-action. With the news of Tim Burton era Batman Michael Keaton potentially reprising the role in the upcoming Flash movie, some fans were hopeful that he might play the mentor type to a younger Terry McGinnis. That being said, it's now unclear whether Keaton will even appear in The Flash, so adjust your expectations.

The Batman is currently set to be released in theatres on March 4th, 2022.
