It's been a while since we've heard any news regarding the developers over at WB Games Montreal. Truthfully, following Rocksteady Studios decision to take the reins for the Arkham franchise once again after WB Games Montreal's effort with 2013's Batman: Arkham Origins, the Canadian studio has done little to recapture the public's imagination aside from creating the free-to-play MMORPG Lego Legends of Chima Online for iOS and Mac.
However, it seems as if the game developing subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive is set to enter the fray once more. According to several listings for employment on WB Games Montreal's official website, the game developers behind Batman: Arkham Origins are preparing to hire for a "new IP project for next generation game platforms,” which spells out the potential for a fresh game in the near-future.
While specifics for the new project are scarce, after a cursory glance of the job description for the production's Game Designer, the upcoming enterprise from WB Games Montreal appears to be an open-world action title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. And as far as the release's graphical capabilities are concerned, the details written for the Technical Director position requires applicants to have "familiarity with the UE3 engine", which implies that the game will be developed using the more advanced Unreal Engine 4.
So far, WB Games Montreal hasn't produced many original titles of their own. Other than Batman: Arkham Origins, the studio's only unique efforts include the Looney Toons/Scooby Doo-centric Cartoon Universe, and the aforementioned LEGO Legends of Chima Online. However, the company did have its hands in the development of Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition which was released for the Wii U alongside the console's launch in North America.
With WB Games Montreal being involved in the creation of multiple Batman games, it's highly possible that the game developers might be revisiting Gotham City with their next title, or they could be jumping into another DC property entirely. Plus, with films inspired by the Dark Knight's adventures being slated for release next year—Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to be specific—there's a chance that video games based on those movies could be in the works with WB Games Montreal at the helm.
Even so, such claims are based entirely on speculation. However, it would be pretty cool if fans were given the chance to play a game as some of the Caped Crusader's most volatile villains like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Killer Croc.
What kind of title do you think WB Games Montreal has planned? Do you think it'll be based in Batman's universe, or do you believe that the studio has something more original in store?
Batman: Arkham Origins is available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.
