Even though Batman: Arkham City wont be out for another year, Rocksteady and Warner Bros. seem to be attempting to generate as much hype as possible for the late 2011 game. We have already heard about the details of the Asylum expanding out to a portion of Gotham City, and a list of potential super-villains like Two-Face.

Now the latest information leak about the game is concerning multiplayer. In the latest issue of the popular UK magazine PSM3,  they claim that the game will have some type of multiplayer mode:

"Multiplayer is a certainty, but no details on this yet".

Will this yet unannounced multiplayer mode be some type of cooperative game type? Or could it possibly be some sort of competitive versus mode? Until Rocksteady spills the details we will just have to guess what this this could possibly be. While I loved Batman: Arkham Asylum and thought the game was incredible as a single player only game, I can see where some multiplayer modes can be an interesting addition.

If the multiplayer is something cooperative, I can see it being similar to Uncharted 2. It could be a separate mode and story apart from the main game. Yes, it would be interesting to play the entire game with your buddies playing as Catwoman, Robin, or Nightwing, or which ever character they put in place, but I feel it would take away from the experience a little. The mood and atmosphere that made Arkham Asylum so great may take a back seat to chatting about last nights football game, or complaining about work, women, and anything else that my friends online seem to do every time they get a headset on. However, if this is the direction Rocksteady goes, I will still be on board. I will play the game once alone, and then tackle it with my friends. Rocksteady knows what they are doing and I do not think they would have the full campaign be co-op if it wasn't up to par with the previous game.

While most people seem to be fairly positive the multiplayer will be some type of co-op, I think there is room in the game for versus play. I think a mode where one player was Batman and the others were random thugs would be very interesting. Something similar to the 'Pitch Black' mode in Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, where one player was Riddick trying to take out an entire team armed with guns and flashlights. For this game I could see Batman having access to his gadgets and moves but if he gets caught out in the open the thugs could easily take him down with their guns. I would be really interested to see how a competitive mode like this could work in the game with the game's free-flow combat system.

Please keep in mind that the above game modes are just wishful thinking on my part as nothing has been confirmed or announced by Rocksteady. With the game being a year away a lot can change with a game. With that being said, do any Ranters think my suggestions would be interesting? Do any of you have any ideas of your own you would like to see in Arkham City multiplayer?

Batman: Arkham City is scheduled for a Fall 2011 release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
