It looks like another high profile game will be getting stereoscopic 3D support, as Warner Bros Interactive and DC Entertainment announced today that Batman: Arkham City will support both stereoscopic 3D and anaglyphic 3D. This comes hot off the heels that Gears of War 3 will also feature 3D.

Arkham City is one of the most highly anticipated games this year, and the inclusion of 3D support should bode well for those hoping to get some use out of their 3DTVs - or anyone thinking about buying one.

Many developers have already expressed their belief that 3D technology is not yet ready to reach full market penetration, or create anything truly worthwhile. Despite this, it's still good to see developers trying to incorporate the technology into their games - to give players the option to choose whether or not they want to play the game in 3D. Sony, being the largest supporter of stereoscopic 3D in the industry, has already expressed that the addition of 3D barely eats up any resources, so it's good to hear that the inclusion of 3D will most likely not have any negative impacts to the performance of Arkam City.

As stated earlier, Batman: Arkham City will also support anaglyphic 3D. This means that gamers who only own an HDTV will be able to play the game in 3D. Anaglyphic is different from stereoscopic as it does not use shutter glasses - but, instead, the good ol' red and blue glasses from a bygone era. While anaglyphic does not produce the same quality of 3D, it is at least a cost-effective alternative to stereoscopic. Batman: Arkham Asylum also sported this type of 3D integration, and the Game of The Year Edition of Arkham Asylum even came with a pair of 3D glasses.

Batman Arkham City Fan Questions Answer

3D technology itself still has many hurdles to pass before the potential of the technology can be fully realized. To the general populace, 3D glasses appear to be a deterrent for purchasing a 3DTV, as many do not want to deal with the hassle, nor the price, of proprietary glasses. In addition, many have stated that if a game is not built from the ground up with 3D in mind - then the 3D effects do not create the desired effect. Couple that with the high prices of 3DTVs, and 3D definitely has a long way to go before it becomes more prevalent in the industry.

With Gamescom 2011 about to start, there has been a lot of mention of Batman: Arkham City. From the reveal of Mr. Freeze to 3D support, it will be interesting to see if Warner Bros. announces anything else related to the title.
