New behind-the-scenes Batgirl photos reveal a first look at Leslie Grace, the actor who will play Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, on set. The actor was spotted in the character's civilian attire while on set of the upcoming HBO Max project.

Batgirl will be a solo project that stars the titular Batman character in a story that is said to feature Firefly as the main villain. Having Firefly was a smart decision by DC, as the character is underutilized in comparison to other villains such as Joker or Two Face. Brendan Fraser is set to play Firefly, but hopefully after some live-action shine the character will be taken much more seriously.

The behind-the-scenes Batgirl photos, courtesy of Daily Record, shows Grace sporting a GCPD shirt in the role of Barbara The shirt of course stands for Gotham City Police Department, which is where her father (played by J.K. Simmons) works. The actress was all smiles as she was seen walking around the fictional city of Gotham.

The Batgirl set photos give a glimpse at what fans can expect to see when the project drops on HBO Max sometime later this year or next. The set design really makes it appear as if city is fighting to hold itself together, and the graffiti as well as painted mural look make Gotham resemble the city fans know from the comics. Fans will be excited to know that the mural features Batman and Robin, but DC would be wise to keep this project centered on Batgirl.

A lot of DC's best received work is from the comic books, animated movies, animated shows, and video games. Most of these projects are heavily focused on the more known heroes, like Batman and Superman. Even if it is a Justice League project, right at the center are Batman and Superman. DC has been doing better at giving other heroes such as Flash, Wonder Woman, Shazam, and Green Lantern their own time to shine, but still not nearly as much as Batman and Superman.

DC has a lot of characters like Booster Gold, Bronze Tiger, Batwing, Red Tornado, Plastic Man, and many more who most of the public are not as familiar with. Marvel has been actively making their lesser known heroes much more popular. Iron Man, for example, used to be a B-tier hero prior to his first live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The Guardians of the Galaxy were relatively unknown until their feature film debut, and now they've received an acclaimed video game. DC of course is looking to do what Marvel is doing, but it can only do that by not relying on popular heroes. While many can argue that it would be a huge diservice to not see Batman in a project with Batgirl or Gotham in it, many can also say that it would be trailblazing if the Caped Crusader takes the backseat for once.

Batgirl is expected to released on HBO Max in 2022.
