DC and Warner Bros. have many fans excited with the new Batman film starring Robert Pattinson coming out in less than a year. DC also recently announced an exciting Batgirl film and is working on getting production started, with four actresses currently being eyed for the role.

Deadline reports that casting for the title role of Batgirl (or Barbara Gordon) has begun with actresses Isabella Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy), Leslie Grace (In The Heights), and Haley Lu Richardson (Split) currently auditioning. Some sources indicate that Haley Lu Richardson may have already stepped away from the role before testing took place. The studio has no comment on current testing processes.

Little information is known for the new Batgirl film to date, aside from the fact that it will stream on the HBO Max service, which will make the film DC's first major property to go directly onto a streaming platform. It is still not clear whether or not the film with be going to theaters alongside the HBO Max premiere. Moroccan directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, known for the Bad Boys franchise, are set to direct the film while Kristin Burr produces.

Batgirl Barbara Gordon Batman DC comic

Over the years, Batgirl has appeared in many comics and video games, as well as Batman: The Animated Series and the animated Killing Joke film. The character, who is the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, is a classic within the Batman universe and it will be interesting to see how the superhero film will tie the character into the other projects within the universe. Of course, DC is known for creating different universes and timelines across all of the feature films, graphic novel adaptations, and various CW television shows. So, all things considered, the Batgirl film seems to already be moving in a new direction from the current cinematic universes.

The Batgirl film is introducing a variety of cast and crew who are new to DC territory. With all the currently auditioning actresses having different film backgrounds and no history in the DC universe, the feature will most likely break new ground by introducing a new character (and actress) to the DC world.

Similarly, Arbi and Fallah have a background in action films, but not superhero films. Hopefully, the plethora of new blood coming into the universe for this new film will establish a fresh and action-packed take on the highly demanded Batgirl feature.

Batgirl is currently in pre-production.
