A number of older games have received attention for modern revivals such as Pokemon Stadium and Midnight Club. While it is not an official announcement, publisher Bandi Namco has recently registered two trademarks in Europe for the Nintendo GameCube exclusive titles, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, as well as its prequel, Baten Kaitos Origin. What does this mean? Well, perhaps it could be a sign of a future revival of the old JRPG.
Baten Kaitos was a role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft and tri-Crescendo, and published by Bandi Namco for the Nintendo GameCube back in the early 2000s. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean launched for Japan in 2003, followed by a North American release the following year. Its prequel, Origins, saw its release in 2006. The title was announced during a period when the number of JRPGs was limited on the GameCube.
However, apart from a failed revival for the Nintendo DS, there have since been no further entries announced for the series. After its cancellation, developer Monolith Soft and its team began shifting its efforts towards further developing its other projects, including Xenoblade Chronicles.
While this information may indicate a possible revival of the series for a new age of consoles, these ideas are only speculation. There has been no official word from the developers or publisher regarding the matter. However, perhaps a showing of fan excitement and support for a possible comeback may help sway Bandai Namco into further consideration.
The Baten Kaitos series is currently available exclusively on the Nintendo GameCube.
