Barry's latest episode went into a rather unexpected twist when it decided to reference the Fast and the Furious franchise to try to comfort some of the show's newest characters. According to Stephen Root, who plays the sociopathic newly formed mob boss Monroe Fuches, it was a completely improvised scene.

Because Barry is a dark comedy, it has gradually embraced its dark side. However, it always has its moments where it remembers how funny it can be when it's called for. In the penultimate episode of the series, there was a scene in which Fuches' gang discusses the Fast and the Furious movies as a way to help Fuches' girlfriend and her child feel comfortable while the gang is well, brutally murdering people. Root explained what went down while they were filming that scene.

Root gave the full details while talking with Daily Beast. “Initially, we had [Fuches’ girlfriend] talking to me,” Root said. “Her not saying anything was way funnier. So her daughter speaks and says, ‘Yeah, we’re uncomfortable when you cut off their heads.'” Root then talked about what brought up the popular movie franchise. “[Watching] Fast and Furious—that was completely an improv that was developed through those guys behind me,” Root continued. “They riff on the fact that, ‘No, it wasn’t in Fast and Furious 2, it was in 3, and this and that—that’s all them. That’s the joy of this show, is that you can come up with something like that, which is not on the page, but it’s well within the realm of the show."

The scene itself is layered comedy, seeing how Fuches has embraced himself as a ruthless criminal mastermind who will stop at nothing to accomplish his goals. Yet, at the same time, he has a girlfriend with a child of her own for whom he clearly wants to show his love. Trying to balance those two lives is hilariously dysfunctional, especially since it appears that Fuches is genuine in trying to let them know that he's not a bad guy (any Barry fan knows that he is). Adding The Fast and the Furious franchise was just the cherry on top of a pretty hilarious and fitting scene, knowing that the show is approaching its end.

And it should only get worse from here since the show is hyping up a Barry-Fuches-NoHo Hank showdown in the Barry series finale. Fuches has demonstrated that he is basically invincible as a crime boss following his stint in prison. While he has indicated that he wants to see Barry, no one knows exactly for what purpose seeing how he flip-flopped on his former criminal partner in the penitentiary. Though Barry has let his life as a hitman go, he still possesses the skills to expertly kill someone like he intended to kill Gene Cousineau. With him out of Jim Moss' captivity and his family in danger, Barry not only has reason to kill again but now he's pissed off.

We all remember the last time Barry Berkman went berserk. Fueled by vitriol for Fuches, he shot up an entire monastery despite only having hate for one individual in particular. Will Barry be able to keep that up against Fuches' invincible gang, knowing that it's been years since he last killed someone? Knowing how this show works, odds are it will be fast, and on top of that, it will be furious.

Barry will air its final episode on May 28, 2023, at 9 pm ET and will stream on HBO Max.
