Update 5/7/2021: The Nintendo Switch version of the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance re-release has been delayed by at least a few days.

Original story follows.

There was a period of long gaps between Dungeons and Dragons games, despite the franchise once being host to tons of titles based on the fantasy RPG. Of those games, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is one of the most notable, with the PS2 classic having fans of all caliber. While the game has been hard to find for years, it's being re-released digitally for fans.

Released 20 years ago, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance has been looked back upon fondly by many, with the game garnering both commercial and critical success over the course of its lifespan. Its action RPG stylings made it markedly different from some of the other games under the Baldur's Gate title, though that didn't make it resonate with fans any less.

Now, those that have been itching to go back to the game, or missed it entirely, will have the chance to pick it up on modern hardware starting tomorrow. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is being re-released on consoles, including the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Switch. The game will support up to 4K visuals depending on which platform players choose, so it'll be some significant polish. Plus, there are PC and mobile releases in the works for later this year.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance will cost players $29.99. It also supports local co-op for two players, so anyone that picks up a copy can bring someone else along for the adventure. It's unlike many of the other Dungeons and Dragons games on the market, but that's a big part of what makes it unique, compared to some of the other options out there.

It's no surprise that Interplay has decided to re-release the game either. A reboot of the Dark Alliance games is slated for June, though it's markedly different from the older titles. While the core philosophy is still similar, the idea isn't to retread the same ground that the original did. Instead, the new Dark Alliance will seek to overhaul the formula, offering tons of new gameplay mechanics as well as swapping perspectives to a more over-the-shoulder look.

There are a lot of Dungeons and Dragons games in the works right now, with a broad variety of size and scope. Hopefully, that will mean all of the fanbase's wildest dreams come true. Regardless, now certainly seems like a good time to be a Dungeons and Dragons fan, simply because of its expansion into new forms of media.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance releases May 7 for PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
