Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 gameplay reveal event at PAX East is coming up fast, but that didn't stop a dozen screenshots of the game from appearing online earlier today. While fans will have to wait for Larian to actually confirm these details, the images do offer a good look at what the gameplay in Baldur's Gate 3 will look like, both in combat and conversation.

Baldur's Gate 3 was first revealed at E3 2019, and most of what is known about the game right now has a lot to do with the presence of mind flayers within the city. Today's event is meant to be the first time that fans are getting a more in-depth look at Baldur's Gate 3 since its announcement, as precious few details have been shared thus far. First off, there are the combat images: Baldur's Gate 3 is a CRPG like its predecessors, and the familiar isometric angle does make an appearance in the screenshots. Based on both combat images and the game's supposed UI, it also looks like combat will be turn-based, just like Larian's Divinity: Original Sin 2. Of the images leaked via Imgur, many look to be examples of both dialogue and cutscenes, and Baldur's Gate 3's dialogue format appears to be very different from the original games--but then again, technology has improved by multitudes since 1998, and Larian is taking advantage of that to make sure that dialogue, at least, feels up-close and personal.

In revealing Baldur's Gate 3 dialogue examples, the screenshots also offer a look at several characters from the game, some of whom look like they could be possible party members to accompany the protagonist. Regardless of these characters' role in the game, it's clear that Larian is utilizing the diversity of Faerun and of Dungeons & Dragons as a whole; the screenshots contain humans, elves, githyanki, and tieflings, and presumably, there's much more yet to be revealed. Baldur's Gate 3 is "based off current D&D mechanics and spells," after all, and D&D lore today is incredibly expansive.

Overall, despite them being a series of hastily leaked screenshots, it's hard to deny that Baldur's Gate 3 looks quite beautiful. Fans of the original games will recognize plenty of familiar elements from those games within 3, adapted for the modern era and with graphics that finally do the Baldur's Gate saga justice.

Whether or not Baldur's Gate 3 will live up to the impressive legacy of its predecessors remains to be seen, but based on trailers and the few glimpses of the game provided so far, it seems like Larian is off to a solid start.

Baldur's Gate 3 is in development for PC and Stadia.
