It has been quite some time since news regarding Baldur's Gate 3 has come to light, but it looks as if fans of the role-playing game franchise may have an actual sequel to look forward to at some point in the near future. As it so happens, a recent rumor making the rounds suggests that the third entry in the wildly popular series is currently in development by Divinity: Original Sin developer Larian Studios.

According to the scuttlebutt, an RPG Codex user mentioned that they knew a former Larian developer that was working on Baldur's Gate 3, with inXile Entertainment's Brian Fargo then adding more fuel to the fire of the game's existence by claiming he knows which team is behind the sequel, stopping short of openly naming Larian. While it's important to stress that this information is based on rumor alone, it's also worth noting that Fargo was the founder of Interplay Entertainment, Baldur's Gate's original publisher, so it's likely that he would have an idea of where the franchise is headed.

Following the online hearsay about Baldur's Gate 3 being developed by the Divinity: Original Sin team, Larian Studios went on to deny the rumor, and then added that it hasn't even bought any IP. As stated by the Belgian developer, it is going to continue to work on Divinity, as well as its recently announced project code named "Gustav", which the studio will officially reveal once it's good and ready to do so.

All things considered, even though it looks as if the rumors are not true and that Larian isn't going to be behind Baldur's Gate 3, one can only hope that the role-playing game franchise eventually gets a third entry to finally complete the trilogy. It's been over 18 years since the second installment released on PC, so it's safe to say the fans have been patiently waiting for even a shred of info related to Baldur's Gate 3's creation.

Baldur's Gate 3 has yet to be officially announced.
