Bad Boys is getting another sequel. According to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, both of whom are set to return, the duo will be donning their police badges yet again. The original two films were both directed by Michael Bay, but the director chairs for the recent sequel Bad Boys for Life were filled by Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Bad Boys is a franchise which stars Smith as Detective Lowrey and Lawrence as Detective Burnett. Set in Miami, the series is a '90s throwback, complete with over-the-top action and violence. Lawrence had previously given a Bad Boys 4 update and stated that the duo had at least one more movie in them. The previous entry, Bad Boys for Life, was released back in 2020.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the untitled Bad Boys sequel is in the works over at Sony Pictures. El Arbi and Fallah are set to return to direct from a script by Chris Bremner. Bad Boys is like a time capsule for the golden age of actioners. Its high-octane action and violence harkens back to a prior age of film. In fact, Bad Boys for Life was the first sequel in the franchise since Bad Boys II hit the screen in 2003. It seems the franchise has a penchant for long periods between films, however; the original movie came out in 1995. Bad Boys 4 could very well be the fastest turnaround time between Bad Boys sequels.

Will Smith Martin Lawrence Bad Boys 4

Smith has been having a tumultuous year since last year's Oscars, where he received a ten-year ban after an altercation with Chris Rock on stage. Since that incident, Smith starred in Emancipation, a slave-era action drama directed by Antoine Fuqua. There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Smith's career - while some defend him, others have spoken against him and stated that they view him differently now. This is probably the first major project he's announced since the incident, and it's a decent chance at a return to form.

Smith's turn as Marcus is one of his iconic roles, and there might be a safety in returning to the role. Despite all the drama and controversy, it looks like Smith is just ready to move on from the mess. So far, the creative team is full of solid picks, and the sequel holds promise. If there's any misstep, it's simply that the movie won't be titled Bad Boys 4 Life.
