It appears that the future is bright for games under the fantasy RPG genre now that players can look forward to games such as Avowed and The Elder Scrolls 6. Although both games are confirmed to be in development, both titles do not have any release dates as of the moment. However, the growing consensus is that Avowed could release well before The Elder Scrolls 6 with the former estimated to launch sometime in 2022-2023, while the latter somewhere around 2024-2025.

Of course, there could be other games within the fantasy RPG genre that could release well before Avowed and The Elder Scrolls 6. However, it is without a doubt that these two games are the most anticipated by players, especially since they are being developed by trusted studios who have since produced high-caliber games in the past. Now, as players wait for Avowed and The Elder Scrolls 6, here are five games that they can play in the meantime to satisfy that thirst for adventure.

Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Headlining this is, of course, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, which is no doubt one of the most popular fantasy RPG games of all time. Ever since its release back in 2011, Skyrim has been remastered and re-released several times, introducing it to a new set of players. Of course, much of Skyrim's appeal lies with the classic and iconic gameplay experience that The Elder Scrolls franchise is known for combined with a vast open-world environment that offers tons of exploration opportunities for players.

The Witcher 3

witcher 3 update

Another noteworthy game that players can lose themselves into while waiting for Avowed and The Elder Scrolls 6 is CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game was first released back in 2015 and puts players in control of the protagonist Geralt of Rivia. Similar to Skyrim, The Witcher 3 also offers a huge open-world environment together with an active main campaign that features tons of quests and side quests for players to accomplish. Overall, The Witcher 3 cemented CD Projekt Red's place in the video game industry, and players may replace this entry with Cyberpunk 2077 when it releases this year, although playing both may be even better.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Players who are looking for the perfect combination of an open-world environment and story should take into consideration BioWare's Dragon Age: Inquisition. Serving as the third main installment in the Dragon Age franchise, Inquisition offers players the classic Dragon Age gameplay and combat together with a vivid story and a good cast of companions to aid the player in completing the main quest. Of course, Dragon Age is also known for its in-depth take on romance, and Dragon Age: Inquisition won't disappoint players in that regard. At the moment, a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition is currently in development, but details about it are still being kept under wraps by BioWare.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is an expanded version of the original Dragon's Dogma that featured more content and a rearrangement of some of the game's events. The extra content added to the game includes an extra dungeon called Bitterblack Isle, together with some additional weapons and armors exclusive to the area. Set in the fantasy world of Gransys, players take control of a human protagonist called the Arisen who is on the quest to defeat the dragon Grigori. The game also features an open-world environment and developer Hideaki Itsuno revealed that he took inspiration from similar franchises such as The Elder Scrolls and Fable.

Available on: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

GreedFall

Last of the list is GreedFall, which is the latest out of all the games on this list but is also the least popular. The game is an action RPG developed by Spiders and published by Focus Home Interactive. GreedFall takes players to an island paradise that has been discovered by colonial forces to contain magic and monsters, where players then take the role of De Sardet who can either side with the natives who live on the island or any of the foreign nations competing to take control. Although GreedFall isn't as popular as the other games on this list, many praised its immersive story and characters. During its release last year, GreedFall was dubbed as the honorary Dragon Age game of 2019 due to its similar combat mechanics, companion system, and plot.
