Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is rumored to be heading in a new direction after losing an important team member. While the future of Jonathan Majors' Kang is in question, the person reportedly leaving the Marvel Studios' project is writer Jeff Loveness.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to be the fifth movie featuring the eponymous superhero team, who will face off against Majors' Kang the Conqueror. A version of Kang was introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, penned by Loveness before he was tapped to write Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

However, The Ankler reporter and Below the Line editor Jeff Sneider has heard Loveness is no longer writing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. According to Sneider, Loveness' departure has nothing to do with the ongoing writers' strike, as he exited Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before the labor dispute. During an appearance on The Hot Mic, Sneider clarified that this news was unconfirmed. However, according to his sources, "It sounds like they're going in another direction."

While a precise reason for Loveness' departure from Avengers: Kang Dynasty was not provided, perhaps the response to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania played a role. Ant-Man 3 was a box office loser for Marvel Studios, grossing a worldwide total of $476 million that fell short of the roughly $600 million needed for the film to break even. The critical response to Ant-Man 3 was equally harsh. While Jonathan Majors' performance as Kang was well-received, the script and CGI were heavily criticized.

If rumors of Loveness' exit are true, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty might have been hit with a production setback similar to Blade. Marvel Studios would need to find a new writer to pen the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty script, but whoever is chosen wouldn't be able to work on the screenplay until the 2023 writers' strike is over. While one could assume the strike won't last long, the 2007-2008 writers' strike lasted over three months.

Several projects could be delayed if the 2023 writers' strike lasts as long. As a result, the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty release date could change. However, as Sneider said, Loveness' exit remains unconfirmed, so fans must wait to see what happens.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.
